Bye Bye Rockies
Well . . . Today is a sad day, it's the day we leave the Rockies! We decided to make the most of it by getting up at 6am so we could explore a little more before starting our journey to Calgary airport to catch our lunchtime flight.
So after a quick coffee in the room and a final pack up of all our stuff (there is a lot) we checked out of the hotel and headed towards Minnewanka lake (and yes I think it is pronounced how you think ?). Along the way we caught a very quick glimpse of a deer before it headed back into the trees. Not long after we came across a few cars parked up at the side of the road. Our first thought was they had seen some wildlife but then we realised it was a beautiful view of Two Jack Lake. I think we had times it right as the mountains were reflecting in the water and it was so still and calm. It made for perfect photos!
By this point we were happy and from what we had heard, lake Minnewanka was meant to be even
better. We got back in the car and headed further along the road, taking in the view of the mountain along the way. We pulled up at the lake and we both looked at each other and agreed Two Jack lake was far better! I think it's the time of day and where the sun is mean each lake would be better at different times?
So after a few photos we decided to head off. We put Calgary airport in the satnav but decided to have one final stop - Johnson lake. This was also a lovely lake and there was someone fishing which was great for photos.
This time we really were heading to the airport. I took about 1hr 40mins to get there so not too bad. Although we did miss the petroleum station so had a frantic search on the outskirts of the airport looking for somewhere to fill up before dropping the car off! Once there a swarm off attendants pounced on the car checking for scratches etc while we headed into the terminal.
We were soon on the plane and ended up sitting behind a pilot and two stewardesses who we presumed
were heading to Toronto to work on the next flight. I think Katie found it calming as there was no need to panic unless she saw the pilot worry! Which helped as there was quite a bit of turbulence.
We collected our hire car in Toronto and ended up with a Mini Cooper Sport, we think it might be an upgrade as we only paid for a cheap car! A bit of a scary drive out of the airport and we were on our way.
Staying a the Sandman hotel in Oakville tonight - a lot nicer than we were expecting! As it turns out there is a steak house attached to the hotel (I think Katie planned it!). So after some persuasion I agreed to go there. Turns out it's an upmarket steak house/sports bar. As we weren't really dressed appropriately we divided to eat in the lounge area. The cocktails here are surprisingly good and only $8 (about £4) so that's me sorted for the night!
