Looking slightly more purple than usual, in the grand old tradition of I'd rather dye my hair than study for exams.
With nineteen hours, one airport shuttle ride, three hours of check-in and several years' worth of panic between myself and a comfortable seat on an Air Transat flight to Hamburg, I thought it might be appropriate to introduce myself. Or give you some idea of what the trip and this blog will consist of, since most of you know me anyway. (Hi, mom!)

Good evening, dear readers. My name is Brett. Ask me about the French Revolution. If you don't want to talk about the French Revolution, please get out of my sight immediately. Like any responsible adult, I've decided to spend a year's worth of savings from my part-time, minimum-wage job on a wild, dangerous and at times unbearably nerdy journey through the former Holy Roman Empire. Accompanying me is my equally idiosyncratic (but much more gainfully employed) partner Alex. I provide the German, he provides the social skills. Together, we are unstoppable (for certain values of "unstoppable").

Unless I'm really bored tomorrow, the next time you hear from me I'll be writing from Hamburg. Go ahead, be jealous.
