Niagara Rapids
The start of our exploration Hey everyone, we've just been to an all you can eat buffet, and eaten the most food i've eaten in ages! its been rolls and soup for a while! the canadians really know how to do a buffet! oh yeah and we've spent a couple of nights in jail, but its been a while since we've written anything so lets go back to the start.............................
Niagara Falls
We caught a coach canada bus to niagara falls for a night and we had the most amazing time. we can't add photos at the moment unfortunately but should be able to get some up soon.
we arrived around lunch time and headed straight out to the river, the hostel we stayed at was pretty cool and clean, and no sharing with randoms!! 😊
our first stop was the rapids we took an elevator down several hundred feet and walked along a wooden walkway (mum, it would have been way to choppy for you 😉 then we walked into niagara which should have taken about 20 mins but it was toasting so i kept having to stop in the shade for wee water breaks, yes i am a sun-dodger hence the lack of
The rapids
Is this too choppy for you Louise?? ;) tan so far!!
The falls are really wonderful, there are two set that they call the american falls and the canadian falls, we were so close to america we could see the tourist visiting on the american side!!
the first falls are called the 'veil falls' which are kind of straight and pretty big, then further along are the horseshoe falls which are kind of horseshoe shaped (no really!!!) and quite a bit bigger. we decided to go on the ledge behind the falls rather than the maid of the mist as that looked quite crowded and soggy! the ledge was really close to the water and we managed to get some really nice photos before the camera started getting a tad wet! the total highlight of the day was the free poncho!! it was yellow and plastic and very flattering for all shapes and sizes!! (and yes paul wore one too!! hee hee! there is photographic evidence of this thomas!! he did try to save it to give to you for christmas in perth but it went kind of mouldy so its now in the bin! 😞 i know you're gutted!!)
that evening we stuck around for the lighting
Bridal Veil Falls
The American half of the falls up of the falls but its really wet near them from the spray which is fine in the sunshine but not so pleasant when its cold and dark and you have a long walk back to the hostel so we didn't stay too long.
Day two at the falls we got all dolled up and headed to the skylon tower, which is like the CN tower in toronto, we had booked lunch there in the revolving restaurant! however niagara decided to have a bit of a thunder storm so we hid out in starbucks for a while til it calmed down a bit then ran up the hill to the tower. when we got in and dried off it was lovely, the food was really good and our aggressive server had his own charm to him! It was still raining when we'd finished eating so we caught a taxi back to the hostel to pick up the bags and head to the bus station.
Back in toronto we were booked into a different hostel which was a vast improvement on the other one! we met a german guy and a swiss guy who were in the same dorm
The Horseshoe Falls
The Canadian half, taken from the lift of the Skylon tower room and a german girl who had just left school, we decided to eat at the hostel as they had a big bbq on and beer and a burger for a fiver! all in all a pleasant evening!
The next morning we woke up before the alarm, probably due to the prospect of all you can eat pancake breakfast at the hostel! after feeding ourselves up we headed to the bus station again to catch the greyhound to ottawa (for anyone who has heard the awful news story about the greyhound bus, don't worry it was nowhere near us)
Ottawa
Ottawa is a lovely city, its really clean and there's quite a lot to do, also as a bonus while we were there the red bull flugtag was on, which basically involves brave (read: stupid) people create a mich mash of potential 'flying' machines and launch them off the end of a runway landing in the ottawa river (they do this all over the world apparently not just in canada!)
We went to the canadian royal mint, which is not where they make currency in use but where they make any special coins, like the olympic ones for
A summer hat?
Either that or a dead raccoon fell on my head vancouver 2010, the tour was really good and after thinking about it for a day or so we decided to buy one of the new release coins its 99.99% silver $20 coin with a swarovski crystal embedded in it. and should triple in value in the next year or so!
while we there there was also a big street festival on called buskerfest, the name is pretty self-explanatory! it was a really good laugh there were four sites and someone new was on everyhour or so. we some so pretty cool fire juggling, fire sticks and average fire poi!
On our last night in ottawa we went to an all you can eat buffet and then on a haunted walk of the city, where we heard all about spooky goings on all over the joint! it was a good laugh but no sleep was lost as neither of us were really convinced!
Oh yeah and back to the jail issue....
The hostel we were staying in used to be the carlton county jail but they converted it so that two cells now make up one dorm room and the washers and dryers are in solitary confinement! hope none
Hershey Tightrope
A Hershey's kiss daring to tightrope walk across 'Niagara Falls' (Stephanie found it funny??) of you thought badly of us!!!! 😉
