Biking in Haliburton County, Ontario. This is not a rails trail. Biking is on county roads. Except for summer weekends, traffic is fairly light.
There are no hills, just a few short slopes.
Starting Point: From the intersection of
highways 118 and 35, drive north on 35 for 3.5 km. Turn right on
North Shore Road. In less than a kilometre, you will come to the Township of
Almaguin Highlands offices. There is lots of parking here. Two porta pottys, tennis courts, a museum and a large covered picnic area.
Follow North Shore Road as it follows
Beech Lake. In a few km you come to a bridge on your right. Take a 50 metre detour to observe a beautiful limestone Anglican Church on
St. Peter’s Road.
Back to North Shore Road and now you are on the shoreline of
Maple Lake. In about 8 km North Shore Road ends at
Airport Road. Stanhope Airport will be directly in front of you.
Turn right on Airport Road for a few hundred metres and then turn left on
Green Lake Road. No surprise, Green Lake Road, follows
Green Lake.
At the end of Green Lake Road, turn right heading towards
West Guilford which is less than 1 km away. Just before the village on your right is
Cottage Country Log Cabin Trading Post. Worth a stop.
The village of West Guilford is pretty small and serves a cottage population. Stay on the main road. In a few hundred metres it meets up with busy highway 118, but just before highway 118, take
Eagle Lake Road (county road 6) on the left.
Pine Lake will be on your left on this ride but you won’t see it.
In about 8 km you will come to
Eagle Lake where you can turn around or continue on to
Sir Sam’s Inn. To the end of Eagle Lake and back is approximately 42 km. This is a great road to bike on in mid to late September to see the autumn colours!
