Saturday was spent gardening, cleaning and preparing for the Susan’s birthday barbeque. I was given the responsibility of using the Whipper Snipper to cut the edge of the grass. Whipper Snipper is a much better name for a grass trimmer than Strimmer!
I was also given the responsibility of loading the charcuterie board and assisting with frying the onions.
Susan did so much in the morning that she needed a bit of a nap in the afternoon!
It was lovely to meet some more of Susan’s friends, and a very pleasant evening was had by all with plenty of food and drink being consumed. The mossies were out again though!
Having started our celebrations quite early, we were tidied up and in bed at a sensible time, however some of the neighbours weren’t, with a party going on in a nearby garden until almost 3am.
I woke on Sunday morning with a swollen eye probably due to a bite from a bug of some kind. Ice was applied with some effect, but it certainly marred my Sunday morning beauty!
Today was Susan’s birthday, and she opened some gifts and cards. With the help of Sarah
and her Amazon Prime account I had bought Susan a mortar and pestle similar to the one used for the made-at-the-table guacamole at the Mexican restaurant in Toronto. A few weeks ago I had also ordered flowers for her, and these had been delivered yesterday afternoon just in time to decorate the table for the barbeque.
Ontario strawberries are now available, and Susan popped round the corner to Gillespie’s Garden to purchase a quart basket of beautiful sweet strawberries for breakfast, to go with the banana bread I’d made yesterday. They are delicious!
I was sent out to find a local postbox about a five-minute walk from the house. I had to cross a busy road all by myself – well, as it’s Sunday it wasn’t busy, but I did have to dodge one car! The postboxes are red, as they are in the UK, but have a drop down flap to open and pop your post on rather than just a slot to poke the letters through. They’re also square rather than tubular!
When I arrived back Lyn had popped into say happy birthday to Susan and drop off her birthday gifts. It was lovely to
see her again after our day in Toronto and catching up briefly at the barbeque yesterday.
Susan went out to visit her mum, so I wandered over to the park for a walk, and to try and find the geocaches I had failed to find at the beginning of my trip. I used bug deterrent before leaving the house, but those pesky mossies are quite tenacious and I definitely had more bites when I arrived back than when I left. I managed to find one of the three caches, but of the other two, the instructions on one just didn’t make sense, and I couldn’t look for the other one as there were too many ‘muggles’ (non-cachers) around and I would have looked rather dodgy rooting around underneath a bridge.
I found my way back without any problems, even crossing the roads all by myself again. It was really warm now, so we had a quiet afternoon inside, and today was my turn to have a little nap!
To celebrate Susan’s birthday and to say thank you to Victoria and Sarah for their hospitality, I took everyone out for a meal this evening. We went to the
The four of us.
Left to right, back row: Victoria, Susan, Sarah. Blackshop restaurant in Cambridge which had been recommended by Sarah. Susan didn’t know where we were going and we teased her for a while beforehand saying we were going to play paintball and to an escape room. She knew we were kidding, but only worked out where we were really going about 2 minutes before we arrived.
The meal was very nice, as was our bottle of cabernet merlot, and the service from our waitress, Andrea, was excellent. I would happily eat there again. Thanks to Sarah for driving! We sat outside for a while when we got home, finishing off a bottle of The Magician shiraz which Susan had received as one of her birthday gifts – I can highly recommend this delicious wine!
It’s strange to think I only have one more full day in Canada before I fly home.
