It didn't take long. The inevitable was to happen. I got restless. Crazy restless after only a few days in my quiet little country hometown. A few phone calls were made Saturday night (my 5th day home) and on Sunday morning “Golfton” (my car) and I were cruising south, destination Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have been planning a reunion with some of my best friends from my college days for a few weeks now. Originally my arrival was to be less spontaneous then a Saturday night talk and a Sunday afternoon arrival, but my friends are cool with my ways.
I met Nick on the warm and misty streets of a Halifax Sunday afternoon after a 4 and ½ hour drive. Like old friends do, we just started talking and in no time it felt like old times. Nick and Steph were to be my hosts for the next few days. I had my own room with a cat that didn't like the fact that I was intruding. Later on we picked up another college friend Courtnay and with Steph's arrival home from work the “Fab Four” was back together. Yeah we may be a little older then our college
days, but once we were all reunited in one room we got back to our foolish (and fun) college ways. That night we ventured to a favourite bar of mine (and everybody else) to exchange stories, drink, laugh and be merry.
It was rumoured that the next morning we were to take a road trip but due to our previous late night, our late sleep in and the rainy weather, we lolly-gagged till the late afternoon. We chose a shorter road trip then originally planned and found ourselves driving towards the south shore of Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove is one of the most famous destinations in Nova Scotia. It has crashing waves, hills of rocks, a beautiful lighthouse and a spectacular coastline on offer. The tiny community is perched along the rocks above the crashing Atlantic Ocean. We all just watched the power of the white capped waves slamming into the rocks with a bang and the spray of the water in the air. Peggy's Cove is a place where you can find yourself sitting watching waves, being peaceful and thoughtless. It is always nice to find a place like that.
Tuesday brought sunshine and pleasant weather. Now
Steph's parents always like to invite me over when I'm in town but this time we invited ourselves. So we decided upon a barbecue at Steph's folks house. Janet and Jerry are two entertaining and great hearted people that enjoy sitting, chatting and having a few good laughs. That's how the afternoon went, Nick cooked, and the rest of us sat chatting, laughing and enjoying the day. Its always a pleasure to spend time in Timberlea with these guys. They spoil me with hospitality, feed me, give me beer and great conversation.
I lived in Halifax a few years back and have been back for a few events and visits. I do find revisiting places to bring around some strange feelings. I had time to retrace steps I took years before that made me smile, laugh and think. It was sad to see my favourite bar and brewery closed, in fact that whole block on one of the main streets just vacant shop fronts. It was an eye opener to walk the streets and think about my former self. It seems like a lifetime ago that I lived in this city, the place has changed, the people I remember
have changed or moved on and I have changed.
Now parking is not something I would not expect to make the blog but it proved to be difficult in the city. Nick and Steph are centrally located which means there are parking meters and expensive car parks. In fact I received a $20 parking ticket on my first day in town, followed by a $60 parking fee for parking in the nearby car park. In fact I spent more on parking then on fuel for my car. After the shell out for parking I parked in a no parking zone with many other cars that park there daily.
I spent 5 days with my best friends from my college days. We talked food, career plans, dreams and life ambitions. It is nice to reconnect with people after my 17 months on the road and with great friends it is always so easy to just continue friendship. As I've done a return after months of absence a few times in my life, I have lost some friendships . Never really understood why, but it's just how it goes. So I appreciate the people that accept our changes that we
go through in this roller coaster of life and the importance of good friendships.
