Travel from Halifax to Newfoundland

In the fall we are planning a trip to the East Coast of Canada. We wish to travel between Halifax and Newfoundland either on the ferry or by air. Could you give me your comments on travelling both ways and some hints on how we should complete this trip. Do we need a car on the Newfoundland side or can we pick up local tours.
