Castle Hill

On Castle Hill we found the remnants of Fort Royal which dates back to 1702. We learned a lot about the rivalry between the French and English as they fought over who got to use the fishing grounds. Placentia Bay was particulary popular as it had lots of places to dry fish.

You can see the current townsite from the remnants of the fort. I suspect back in the day they would have kept those trees cut down to provide better fields of fire in case of attack.

Nice for walking today. The beaches were prized by fishermen back in the day.

This picture shows how fish processors improvised. By standing in the barrel you didn't get the fish guts on you as you processed the fish.
