berg in Griquetberg in Griquetberg in Griquet

on the way north we saw 2 bergs well offshore near Port au Choix - this was the first we saw up close. It rolled overnight for an entirely different look the next day
From Gros Morne we drove to the northern tip of Newfoundland and L'Anse aux Meadows - the site of the first European settlement (Norse) in North America over 1000 years ago. The UNESCO site recaptures the struggle to survive in this harsh climate with actors in role (with local accents) in sod huts going about their daily tasks.

On to Twillingate. As there is only one road to the north we had to retrace our route - but we have found that the views are still fresh from the other direction.
We are really enjoying B&Bs - meeting the locals and interesting fellow travellers and getting good advice.

Fogo is a little island off the east coast and probably as close as we'll find to the traditional old days of subsistence living in fishing outports - wonderful people!

Firsts: icebergs, moose burger, caribou burger, cod tongues (look deceptively like scallops!), squashberry and bakeapple jams....still to come - a Newfie dog and puffins.

Later today we move on to Bonavista.

parts of Fogo remind us of Tasmania - wild and rugged - this walk was an easier version of our memorable hike around Cradle Mountain

Bergs and more bergs
Hi Marlene and Ian, I think that Newfoundland rolled out the icebergs for you! I wouldn't have thought you would see so many this late in the season. What does this say about what's happening to the Arctic? Glad you are enjoying yourselves. Thought you would like Fogo. I hope you get over to Change Islands too. Enjoy! Judy
