OK, I am back…. It’s been quite a trip so far. WiFi and even cell access has not been great in the north end of the island and the part of Labrador we have been visiting. But that has been the only disappointing thing so far. I spoke too soon. I discovered while checking the photos that the date and time on our phones and iPad changed automatically but the camera didn’t which makes sorting the pictures tricky. Back to the beginning of the trip… After a long day in the Montreal airport, the flight to Deer Lake was uneventful. It even landed on time! The Tour Company representative met us and made sure we got off to Corner Brook without any trouble. Much to our (very pleasant) surprise, our bags showed up! The hotel was ... read more

August 29, 2019 – St. Anthony, Newfoundland & Labrador – Weather: 46°F/8°C @ 6:00 am, 55°F/13°C @ noon, partly cloudy, sun tried to peek out in pm, wind 16.1 mph, humidity 76° Early this morning we set anchor in the sheltered harbour of St. Anthony, which is located on the northeastern side of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland & Labrador. The community was established by the French back in the 16thcentury as a seasonal fishing station, though there is evidence that the Vikings were here around 1000 AD at L’Anse aux Meadows. Our excursion for the day, out to L’Anse aux Meadows, started early as our stay in port is only 9 hours long. St Anthony does not have a pier that can readily accept a cruise ship so once again we had to take ... read more

It is tempting to think that a bunch of half starved, frozen, lost and crazy Viking sailors landed by chance on the Northernmost tip of Newfoundland some 1,000 years ago, after a harrowing haphazard voyage through Ice Berg alley. But no! You would be wrong! After half an hour at the historical exhibit and archeological dig at L'Anse aux Meadows (a corruption of "the Cove of Medea" in French) it becomes clear that this settlement was intentional. The cove where those Vikings pulled in is calm and sheltered from the sea, in spite of the fierce wind that was blowing when we were there. The location has the kind of ancient peat that yields iron when heated and treated in the iron smelter and forge which they built. They have found iron nails made from iron ... read more

July 16, 2016 The Norse, Vikings means raiders, came to Vinland from Greenland under the leadership of Lief Ericksson. A bronzed statue in the village of L'Anse aux Meadows stands gazing out to sea much the same as the statue in Trondheim Norway ... actually the two statues are copies of one another. Both have been digitally immortalized ... LOL. In this area of the Northern Peninsula are found the town of L'Anse aux Meadows and the Parks Canada Historical site, a UNESCO Heritage Site, L'Anse aux Meadows. In the Visitors Centre admission is paid and a guided tour can be had for an additional fee. Two couples were also about to pay and the attendant asked if we were together because than the fee would be much lower ...four dollars is four dollars ...paid for ... read more

We wake up to a wet, dreary, cold day. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant. And we are en route north. The goal is to reach the extreme northern tip of the Newfoundland "finger": L'Anse aux Meadows. As you may know, L'Anse aux Meadows is the site of the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America. It was discovered by Norwegian researchers and is believed to be where Leif Erikson and other Vikings stayed intermittently for about ten years. It dates to 1000 AD, 500 years before Columbus' voyages. We stop at Arches Provincial Park near Parson's Creek. The attraction here is a series of magnificent sea arches. They were actually carved out underwater thousands of years ago, then pushed up to their present elevation and location at the ocean's edge. And they are wonderful! We have ... read more

Today is the last day of August and Day 34 of our cross-Canada trip. We have come a long way and have a long way to go and are loving every minute of it. Northern Newfoundland is rugged, harsh in ways, and beautiful in its barrenness. Like most northern communities, the people here must be self reliant and tough but what also springs from living here is a sense of community as people must support and rely on each other. We in milder climes could learn a lesson from them. The Port Au Choix area has so much to offer and we were sad that we had so little time there to explore. We left our B&B this morning and drove a short distance to the Port Au Choix National Historic Site. Situated in the Gulf ... read more

We are now at the northeast area of the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland and camped near St Anthony. It is a fascinating story about how it was discovered that the Vikings had been here more than a 1000 years ago. Our guide at L’Anse Aux Meadows grew up in the area and used to play on the “old Indian mounds” when he was a boy. He remembers the excavation of the site and knew the people involved. He admits that it was better that he and his friends didn’t know what they were playing on, otherwise they probably would have been digging and looking for treasure and gold. At L’Anse Aux Meadows they have a modern building with artifacts, displays, movies and videos that explain the history of the area. They have the area where mounds ... read more

Took a bit of a detour on Sunday August 1st. Decided to go on standby for ferry to Labrador (actually Quebec, but Labrador is just down the road). An hour and a half ride on a really old ship, kept eyes peeled for icebergs and whales. The bugs were ferocious and we decided to stay in Red Bay at a refurbished fishing hut at a lodge, phenomenal view. Fog settled in during the evening making it unlikely to view the supposed 100 ft iceberg spotted further out and drifting this way. Fish and chips were divine and Pat keeps fishing (bought head net) to try and catch our supper but no luck yet! Labrador is a stark beauty, reminds me of a green, lush Connemarra (sp?) in Ireland. Very rocky, few trees, they look almost stunted. ... read more

We drove aboard the MV Caribou for the six hour trip from North Sydney to Port aux Basques. The ferry had ample seating for those taking the trip. There was a restaurant, gift shop, and game room on board. The place also had a bar and lounge with live music. A movie was also shown. Supposedly, there was wifi on board but we were unable to pick up anything with our laptop. Nevertheless, the crew all worked to make the crossing as smooth as possible. The ferry is named after her predecessor, SS Caribou, which was sunk off Port aux Basques in October of 1942 by a German submarine. The incident took the lives of 137 passengers and crew. There is a memorial to the SS Caribou in a small park in Port sux Basques. From ... read more
