Vancouver City
View of the city. Monday 6 June - Saturday 5 July:
We're here to check out the city - see if we might be happy living here one day. Steve and I are glad to be here but feeling homesick already!
In the next few days we drove to Abbotsford (too Bible-belt), Chiliwack (too small), Hope (way too small), White Rock (too British-seaside) and Langley (possibility) to check out the general feel of the places.
Highlights:
• Enjoyed some of the music at the annual Vancouver Jazz Festival.
• Signed the petition to save the Hollow Tree in Stanley Park (well, I did anyway - Steve wouldn't say which way he'd voted). Did we save it?
• Dinner with Steve's cousin Marco and Jeannine and their cute kids Rebecca and Nicholas at their home in Langley. Thanks for all the very helpful info, hope the website's up and running soon!
• Spent a few days with our friend Lesley & new baby Aldous in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, where we wandered around the old-growth Tofino temperate rainforests and watched a few grey whales in Ucluelet Sound (plus black bears and bald eagles!)
• Met up with Slaven and his amazing robotic docking
vaccuum in Victoria, and tried his wonderful alcohol concoctions. Also sampled some of the IPAs (Indian Pale Ales) in a funky restaurant with some of his friends. Victoria seems to be an affiliate haven and we got the full sales pitch for moving there ;-)
• Spent Canada Day by the Harbour and watched the fireworks. First time back in Canada for Canada Day in about 10 years!
• Crossed the Capilano Suspension Bridge (originally built in 1889, it stretches 450 feet across and 230 feet above the Capilano River and Canyon).
• Vegetarian food everywhere we went!
• Fast and mostly free Internet connection everywhere we went!
Lowlights:
• Weather very similar to London - cloudy most days!
• The 4-5 blocks downtown where the city's homeless drug addict population live. Were shocked at the numbers (about 1,000 sleeping rough) but apparently many come from the neighbouring provinces where the winters are much harsher.

German and the bears
Hi guys I see your doing an excellent job with the German. I have never seen him looking so happy. In the picture of the bears there is a yellow something on the rocks near the bear at the water's edge - could it be the German. Are the bears actually Valerie and Steve in bear suits? Dave
