Inland Lake
20 kms from Powell River and well worth a visit. Very quiet, very serene and worth a whole day trip around it. Friday:We woke to an overcast but mild day so decided that a bike ride was in order to go for a coffee. After adjusting bikes and helmets we set off for "Serious Coffee". David and Mary will have some readjusting to do after this. David's bike wasn't too bad but Mary's was a bit of a clunker with strange gears, an awful seat and a brake that didn't work BUT the tires were good and it moved along okay.
On arrival back it was starting to spit but not enough to stop a walk along the beach in front of the house. We did an umbrella hunt and came up with one and set off along the beach where a surveyor seemed to be measuring from the shore to the low water mark. By the time we turned back the rain finally arrived and as the day progressed it became continual. So, what to do on a wet day? Go to the bank, visit the Rec Centre for a walk in the forest (not such a good idea as it turned out), get some fish for dinner and return home to read and play games. This is one of the
great things about Home Exchange - if it rains, you've still got room to move and relax. Imagine being in a Camper on a wet day. So, I'll roll today's blog and tomorrows into one as it looks like rain tomorrow too.
Saturday: Today started off wet but not too wet. We knew there was a Market on Saturday but couldn't find it (didn't take the map) so called at the Information Office. They were most helpful and gave some suggestions for the day: a walk by Inland Lake, a Brewery Tour and the Fall Fair. So the day was planned.
We set off first for Inland Lake which was 20 or so kms from Powell River inland. Appropriate name for a lake. After turning off the asphalt we had 8 kms of potholed metal road at 30 km/hr so we were trundling along doing dodgems with potholes. We parked and set off in light drizzle along a well maintained gravel path up the lake. There was absolutely no one around but us so it was very quiet. It is 13 km around the lake so we walked for some time taking lots of photos of mossy trees,
The Fall Fair
The usual market happens here every Saturday the serene path, the lake and a squirrel. It would have been absolutely gorgeous on a sunny day with the leaves turning to their autumn shades but it was still really lovely.
Back in Powell River we lunched in town then headed off for the Fall Fair which had replaced the usual market for the weekend. It was great! It was reminiscent of our Mapua Fair but add animals, flowers, crafts and vege shows to that as well as an excellent Blues Band. It was an excellent way to round off our week in Powell River.
We've had a most enjoyable time experiencing everything about small town life in Canada. It's friendly, interesting, amazingly well serviced, beautiful and isolated. It's just a small pocket in a vast Province and a vast country but in every corner life goes on as at home, just slightly differently.
So, we pack up, clean up, hose down David's filthy car from the Lake trip, and get ready for a taxi to the ferry in the morning.
