Edit Blog Post
Having spent an extra day in calgary we had 5 days in which to make our way back to Vancouver.
The stops came thick and fast starting with Yoho National Park. The word "Yoho" is a Cree Native American expression of 'Awe & Wonder' and after visiting the Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge and Takakkaw Falls you could see why they chose the word.
Having made good time we pushed on and instead of doing a night stop in Golden (looked a bit uninspiring) we headed for Revelstoke. On route we passed through the Glacier National Park home to over 400 Glaciers, roughly covering one tenth of its 520 sq miles. That's a fact kids!! (I had to convert from Km's as well!!).
On entering Revelstoke we passed a KOA campground sign and having had a good experience in Clearwater we decided to stay with them again. It turned out in our favour as after enquiring at reception the Chinese girl said " I have very good deal for you." And she did! We were upgraded to a Chalet for the same price as a cabin. Yipee!
The accomodation made up for the miserable weather outside and we
ended up staying for two nights , which gave us some time to update the blog (FREE INTERNET). At around this time we found out that I had left the adaptor plug at Laela's in Calgary and this after Jo had specifically asked if I had packed it before we left!! Oops! Nevermind I said. I'm sure we'll manage to pick up another one! Well you'd of thought so : ( Not a great call for UK plug adaptors over here!
The next morning, well it was almost afternoon as we needed to wait for our hair to dry naturally before stepping out in the cold air! We headed for Mount Revelstoke to see the "Meadows In The Sky." Unfortunately, due to bad weather the road up there was closed. However, the helpfull toll guy offered an easy going trail as an alternative. And because the name of the trail sounded, well so......Inspirational, we gave it a shot.
The "Inspiration" Woods Trail was anything but, still it was nice to get outdoors in the fresh air and we also got to see an ORANGE mushroom!! The hour walk did give us the inspiration to go and visit the
nearby Revelstoke Dam.
At first sight it was easy to see how big the Dam was, but we certainly didn't realize how important it was. The nice security guard filled us in on the finer details as when asking why he needed to see my driving license and a form of ID he snapped back that this was a HIGH SECURITY OPERATION and possible terrorist target............
The dam is part of a 5 dam network along the Columbia river. It provides the whole state of BC and a fair proportion of the West Coast of America with electricity...GULP!! We never knew that and all in little old Revelstoke!!
The whole dam experience was very informative and FUN. They gave us these earpiece things which played commentary when you were at points of interest along the tour. In principle this is a great idea. except we went round the wrong way and got a little confused!
After a superb dinner of Macaroni Cheese (Thank you Laela) we settled for an early night as we wanted to get going first thing in the morning.
The next destination was Hope but being quite a distance (at least nine
fingers on the map) we had a stop over close to Penticton in the Okanagan Valley. We stayed in log cabin at another KOA by Gallagher Lake which was very pretty. The evening meal at the "Ye Old Welcome Inn" started off well as I burst out laughing in the face of the barman when he asked Jo for ID "She's nearly thirty" I blurted out to sturn looks from Jo!! But still!! I went to the car to fetch the passports.
The drive from Penticton to Hope was fantastic. what a drive. Full of lakes, vineyards, fruit stands all with huge mountain backdrops and deep blue bowed skies over head.
The drive was sealed off when driving through the Cascade Mountains and a Golden Eagle glided across the sky right infront of us. WOW. That was cool!! It was unmistakable with its bright white head and oversized yellow claws.
UNFORTUNATELY, we were both too gob smacked to get to the camera in time. And so to Hope.
Quick message to Sambo's who will be 2 on Saturday 30th. Happy Birthday God son number 2!! Hope you have a wicked day and don't go eating too
Mountain Goats on the Rd to Revelstoke
I nearly ran over their mum as she was eyeballing me from the middle of the road as I approached. much jelly and being sick on the carpet!! lots of Love Uncle Ben & Auntie Jo xxx
