The Hoodoos
These sand pillars are amazing and huge up close DAY 7: WEDNESDAY, JULY 4: Well we had another great day in the Banff National Park area, our last full day here to be exact. When I got up and started working on the blog and typed in thedates it was hard to believe it was The Fourth of July. Everyone was probably going to the parade and excited to watch fireworks. The holiday was over here. I did forget to mention that the night we stayed in the parking lot at Quarry Lake we saw some fireworks being shot off the tippy top of one of Three Sisters Mountains. We had to ask the next day how people get up there, and found out there is a road. Since has will have many mountains to drive up and down we passed on this one. One last note on that day before I get on to today's events while walking that morning we saw parachutes jumping off the mountainside...well when we drove away later that morning Hanna spotted something red and white stuck in a tree...with binoculars you could tell it was a parachute.
Wow, today was our last full day in the Banff area so we needed to finish
site seeing. It was beautiful and sunny out! But only 55', not quite the 93' you are experiencing back home. We headed out to Tunnel Mountain and stopped to see The Hoodoos. They are tall, pillars nestled in the mountains, made of silt, sand, minerals and rocksformed over time by wind and water. Of course, The Evans Family is never satisfied seeing something from a distance so we hiked right down to them for some great pictures. We were so glad we did, they were awesome up close. As we were standing there 3 white water rafts came me floating down on the river below. They all started taking pictures as we were waving to them. It was funny because now The Evans' are in all their vacation pictures. By the way, they did wave back to us. After that we headed over to take a boat cruise on Lake Minnewanka. It is Banff's largest lake and is 500' deep and a freezing 36'. This lake is used to power electricity to the towns of Canmore and Banff. The only wildlife we saw was a couple bald eagles, it was a beautiful tour but kind of slow for us us.
The best part was when we got off the boat there was a herd of about 25 mountain sheep in the parking lot trying to cross a bridge. Maggie separated from us a bit and got cornered on a fence by one. She freaked a little, but they seemed very used to the public making a big fuss about them. We drove to the Banff Springs Hotel, which really resembles a castle and then headed back to the camper for dinner. Our plan was to walk to DQ for ice cream on our last night here...we didn't realize it was about a 2.5 mile walk one way. One our way we saw a mule deer and had of course, Brett had us in stitches the whole way. Wonderful three days in Banff.
Day 7 Facts: Total Mileage: ????
Plate Quest: MN, AK, MO, The Klondike, Yukon, and Nova Scotia
Wildlife Report: 1 mule deer, herd of mountain goats, 2 bald eagles
Funny: We walked all the way to DQ for ice cream and when we finally got there it looked like they were closed. Brett was going to throw his walking stick threw the window, however
Lake Minnewanka
This is a picture from our boat cruise. The opening shown here is where a glacier once moved through the inside was closed but the drive-thru was open. Hanna was so embarrassed because we walked threw the drive-thru. We were crying we were laughing so hard because Brett and Aaron pretended the walking stick was a car and proceeded to "drive-thru". After that even Hanna said that this had to be the funny of the day.
Awful: Maggie and Brett officially have Hanna's cough and fever. I'll be on the phone in the morning with our doctor to try to get prescriptions sent here before we head into no mans land.
Tomorrow we are headed up towards Jasper National Park on HWY 93 on The Icefields Parkway. I imagine Internet will not exist until we get o Dawson Creek, Mile 0, on The ALCAN. So stayed tuned.
