Howdy how. This blog should make interesting reading as I am currently 10 hours into a 14 hour flight, and I have also consumed two gin and tonics, a Budweiser and two jack daniels and cokes. But hey I thought it would be a great way to kill ¾ of an hour.
So after a teary goodbye to my mother and father and bros I made my way towards the departure lounge when I receive a firm tap on my back to be met by two gentleman wearing shades saying ‘step this way sir’. It took me a second or two to realise it was none other then my two pals Ollie and Tom who had come to see me off. After breathing a sigh of relief that no cavity searches were to be undertaken by security I made my way to the departure lounge. The flight there was uneventful and I arrived in dubai in the early hours of Sunday Morning. There was some misunderstanding between me and my host Yazin ( a Jordanian Milton Keynes gentleman who was putting me up). In our correspondence he mentioned that he would be at work until 8 and would
meet up, and we’d go for dinner. Being that my flight arrived at 7am that would mean me having to wait around for 12 hours in order for him to return from work. What I failed to grasp that I could indeed go to his flat whenever I pleased as there were numerous other couchsurfers there and I could knock on the door and walk in.
Being that I had about 30kgs of bags with me, I made a beeline for the bag drop off at the central Dubai Mall. This mall is insanely huge containing an icerink, cinema and aquarium within its confines. I caught the very swish tube from the airport to the mall and proceeded to spend the next 8 hours there, wondering around aimlessly killing time. At one point I sat down for a snooze in the middle of the mall, clutching my small bag for safety. At about 4pm I messaged my companion who told me to go round as the door was always kept open. I took the metro to dubai marina station and I was very pleased to see that his block of apartments was a 5 minuite walk from
the station.
Tired from my travels and lugging my bags around, I spent the rest of the evening chilling out with a Swiss Couch Surfer called Ellie and an Irish Personal trainer called Mark who lives with Yazin.
The next day I awoke fairly early and decided to make the most of the morning whilst the heat still manageable. I walked from his apartment to the beach, a walk of about half an hour. I sat on the beach for about an hour, got too hot and at which point it was about mid-day, and being pale skinned and STRAWBERRY BLONDE AHEM! I decided to head back to the apartment. As it has reached the early thirties, I was parched and stopped at a bar for an orange juice to quench my thirst. This orange juice cost around 50 Dihrams- about £15! I had a bottle of vodka for that at the aiport with my remaining cash. I then returned for the flat for a little siesta and decided to make use of the towerblocks facilities and read my book by the Pool. Later that night I went up the Burj Khalifa, the worlds tallest building! After that
I had tea with Yazan who decided to take me to a Lebanese restauraunt. As I was unfamiliar with the food on offer on the menu, i asked for a recommendation and yasin gave me his favourite dish. I can’t exactley remember what it was called but it was chicken thighs cooked in orange sauce with rice. This was perfectly palatable , but a little sweet for my likeing. For starters we had pitta bread and hummous- YUM!
As I was due to leave in the morning at 05:40, I watched the film dodgeball and went swiftly to bed. I caught the metro to the airport ( which took about an hour) and got on the plane to Sydney. We were delayed by about 15 minuites at the start due to a fault with one of the toilets, and then as we were pulling off after those tugging lorries have pulled the aircraft from the gate, all the electrics failed and the Airbus A380 stalled. After another half an hour of wirring one of the engines to get power back, we took off. To my suprise the flight is about a third full, meaning I have 3 seats to lounge out and lie down
So far on this flight I have watched Alan Partridge – Alpha Papa ( as i my old man would say- what a load of tosh) and also my most favourite film as a kiddy- Charlie and the chocolate factory. I had to stop myself bursting into Song.
My next Blog Will be on Sunday, so have a nice week people and remember- stay classy!
