27th April Gallipoli

Early start! Pleasant ferry crossing to European side, saw the main sites of Anzac Cove, the memorials, Lone Pine cemetery, Attaturk 's monument, the New Zealand monument, and the Turkish memorial and cemetery. Wept at Anzac Cove and again at Attaturk's words to the mothers of the foreign soldiers who died.

Salutary to learn of the Turkish experiences during WW1 and the independence struggle / civil war that resulted in the modern state of Turkey. Very moving to observe the Turkish groups visiting their memorial, clearly deeply valuing the experience.

It all begs the question of why war?

This captures the blend of experience and esteem for each other shared by the Australian and Turkish troops, which continues to be valued today.
