The day started with the apricot and the anti-apricot. I'm not going to explain this. Be puzzled.
We saw a place for sale in Selcuk, a house in the old town, on the hill. It was rather run down to say the least, probably needs a new roof, new floorboards, new stairs, new windows and new doors. It was quite fascinating and certainly had potential, and some of the rooms were remarkably cool which is a benefit of stone walls and floors. At the right money I might have considered it, but the owner really wanted way too much especially since the restoration work needs to be done to meet the strict preservation rules on what is an historic area and this will no doubt mean higher costs to get the place straight. She would have come down. Bargaining is a necessity. But this was not so much of a restoration as a complete rebuild and we would have had to check if the place was structurally sound.
We went to the beach at Pammucak which was interesting, had a long walk on the sand until we got to a bit that had been claimed by some ghastly resort hotel where an officiously unpleasant security guard told us to go away. We ended up finding a small track along a stream which run by the side of the above aberration to bring us back to the main road. So if anyone reads this who is thinking of staying at the Aqua Hotel place on Pammucak beach, that stream which runs past your 4* rooms and lawns where your children play, and no doubt the rushes beyond, is not only full of terrapins, frogs, small fish, but is also well populated with snakes. Poisonous ones, vipers.
After the beach we went to Kusadasi. Bird island was fun, a small fort with views back over the harbour. I do not think I want to live in Kusadasi. It was full of tourist stuff often with inflated prices marked in Euros. I was quite surprised not to be invited to see carpets or leather, or such, with the usual come look, have tea, routine. It must be hideous when the cruise ships arrive which they do on a regular basis all summer. Managed to avoid the hunters back in Selcuk - we carried a Turkish newspaper around with us and that might hav helped. We had a stroll round various areas. They do not seem to be building new houses in this area. So a flat or a serious restoration project are the real choices here.
The Homeros Pension really is great. Breakfast was fantastic, no doubt we will have dinner here tonight. We got all our laundry done for us. The room is cool, the AC helps a lot. The have a fridge full of beer and other drinks, and no doubt just like last night there will be wine before dinner. It is a red, but a light one, a little like the red Demestica you can get in Greece. It is a nice touch to sip wine whilst watching the sun go down and waiting for dinner. Dinner is cooked by the family - in Pamukkale I decided that, on the whole, I would prefer my food to be prepared by a professional chef, but the people here cook wonderfully. Everything seasonal. Including the apricot ad the anti apricot, but I am not going to tell you about that.
It has been cooler today, it is 6pm, and the temperature is only 29C. This is 8C cooler than the same time yesterday.
