We left our desert camp around midday, having been assured the journey to Muscat would take hours and the roads might be closed. In fact it took two hours and we were dumped at the airport, very annoyed, six hours before our flight. When we came to check in, we were told that as we had not taken the first part of our flight tickets (Khasab to Muscat, cancelled by Oman Air), we could not be checked in on this ticket. It was only the persistence of Faisal our check in desk agent, who insisted that this was ridiculous and marched over to the ticketing office, that got us on our plane. The next day was spent on idleness at our delightful Anantara hotel, but we resolved to take a trip to see the sights to ... read more

After four uneventful days at sea we reach Salalah, Oman and berth in a not very attractive container port. Salalah is the capital city of the Dhofar region of Oman and is in the south of the country. It is the second biggest city in the country and is judging from what we can see relatively industrial. The cement works is a local landmark and then some ! Salalah along with Yemen experience a monsoon season which lasts from July to September. (So we should be ok!) During the rains the brown and dry landscape we see is transformed to a beautiful lush green and locals and tourists flock to Salalah to experience it. But Salalah’s real claim to fame is its ancient frankincense trade and UNESCO has put it on it’s World Heritage Lis, naming ... read more

“I was exhilarated by the sense of space, the silence, and the crisp cleanness of the sand.” Thesiger put it in a nutshell. Sometimes, I find, the places that have the deepest impact are the hardest to describe. The next morning, I stood at the top of the smallish (75m/250ft) dune behind our first night’s camp in Rub’ Al Khali and tried to grasp the fact that this stunning, terrifying, hypnotising, incredible landscape continued in front of me for another 500km (310 miles), and stretched the same distance to either side of me. Even today, all of the Empty Quarter crossings made by non-resident explorers can be summarised in little more than a single screen of a Wikipedia entry, and, even now, all the technology in the world cannot insulate the visitor from its dangers. We ... read more

It is 25 degrees and rising and it is only 8am. We are in Oman at the huge port of Salalah. We stood on the quayside as the waiting coaches and cars pulled away. We had booked this tour ourselves on line in the UK and were worried no one would come. Our driver and guide for the morning, Abdul, finally arrived at 9am. He whisked us through the port and drove down town to the heart of the city which is being slowly modernised by a progressive Sultan who has introduced free education and health care for all. Since he came to the throne in 1970, he has achieved a lot and is loved by his people. Our first stop was at the Grand Mosque which is only 8 years old and took 4 to ... read more

Queen Mary 2 and cruising to Salalah Great transfer to QM2 and looking forward to 3 days at sea before berthing in Salalah. QM2 has been remastered since our last cruise on her in 2015. So what has changed, exploring shows not a lot. To me she is still imbalanced with the Queens room are the rear of the ship and access is still up and down. They’ve created a lovely Carinthia lounge which used to be the Winter Gardens, a very underused space but now a more airy area!!! So apart from extra cabins on and extra kennels, nothing much has changed, general decor and titivation!! Salalah is a southern city in the Sultanate of Oman, the capital of the Dhofar region I worked here in 1977, more in Muscat but there was a dairy ... read more

Day 7 - Monday 25th January 2016 Off on our Omani road trip today, and no road trip is complete without a set of wheels so first thing today we had to pick up our hire car. The hotel organised a taxi to take us to the airport for 8 Rials ($36 AUD) and as we drove there our driver gave us some good tips on driving in Oman and even offered us his own personal road map. Looking at the manic traffic I should have asked him to say a prayer for us. Got to the Europcar counter right on time and then had to wait an hour for them to prepare our car, but luckily they upgraded our car. As an Australian it always feels kind of weird sitting on the left ... read more

Geo: 17.0139, 54.0923We've arrived in Oman for two port days separated by another sea day. Today, we left early for our shore excursion to see the sights around Salalah. Leaving the port, the bus had to stop for a security check. An officer came on board to check each person's landing card. They had been given out by ship's personnel as we disembarked. Before we got very far, just after passing customs and security, one couple realized they were on the wrong bus. Although we pulled off the road and the guide contacted his supervisor, we were not allowed to wait for the other bus to catch up. We had to go back to the ship and drop them off before starting again. Arriving at the checkpoint for the second time, our guide was able to ... read more

I wish I could say I slept better, but the hard beds caused me to wake around 3 am. I had to get up and walk around my room for a while. I was looking forward to seeing the stars, but it was quite hazy out. If I were ever to come here again, I would love to go into the mountains to see the night sky... In the morning, I woke and tried to book my return flight from Dubai to Doha and what a nightmare that turned out to be! I stood on the balcony one last time to listen to the waves and see the beautiful beach and I noticed a man in orange coveralls, picking up all the trash on the beach. We had seen a similar guy picking up the trash ... read more

"Do you hear that?" "Hear what?" "Exactly! Silence! No beeping!" One of the things we noticed about Salalah, and one that speaks volumes of the people there, was the complete lack of beeps. No cars honking, nobody tailgating you and flashing their lights trying to run you off the road. People were very content to wait and to let you find your way. I tell you, if you have not experienced a daily commute in the Middle East, you don't know how touching this small token of hospitality is. We commented constantly about it, like when we would go around a roundabout three or four times trying to find the right road. Or when there was some kind of procession on the major freeway at night, there were no beeps - people waited their turn to ... read more
