Well, here is the first sand storm since I've made my return here. It was pretty thick, but not as thick as I saw last time I was here. I'm sure there will be plenty more time for some more of these to come on down! It seems almost as if you are standing in a sci-fi movie, on some distant planet. It seems incredible that people have lived through these for thousands of years and never once complained about it. Well, I'm sure some have, just like the English complain about their rain. Check out the oics, that's me!... read more

Why hello all! Now I realise that this diary entry is a long time coming but I have my reasons and you will find out in due course as to why it has taken so long. Now I am writing this from the safety of my home back in NZ as I am back for a few weeks on holiday after actually making it to graduation in Dunedin. The Month of April OK. From what I remember Spain was the last time I made an entry. I got called back from Spain as I was intending on going to India to do an oil pipelay job for a month or so. Oh did those plans change. When I got back there were delays in getting my Indian visa (who would have thought you need a ... read more

Hello all, from what you have gathered from my few entries so far, I seem to spend more time traveling to some of the world's least turisty places rather than the major destinations. This is my second tour of duty in Iraq, and I must say that four years apart the area has changed little. I am in the south, near the ancient ruins of the city of Ur, and the magnificient Ziggurat. It was very nice to be remembered by the curator of the ruins four years after I last saw him. I was very nervous that the war might have seriously affected him and his family; to my relief, it seems that the horrors of war have made little impact on the daily lives of the people in this region, and that there is ... read more

Bad News I know I promised you big news in this blog. Well, I won’t disappoint, but I wish I could. I had no idea how much news I would have to give in this blog and how bad it would all be. ”Medic!” I walked into the gym the day before yesterday and saw a friend of mine, a medic, on one of the cardio machines. I nodded and said hello to him, but that was all. I didn’t want to bother him while he was working out. That was the last time I’ll ever see him. Someone got hurt on a patrol, and Mike ran to aid his wounded comrade. He never made it there. He died trying to help a fellow soldier in need. He is a hero. Army Sgt. Michael R. ... read more

A buddy of mine recently sent me this question. Hey Tony, I was wondering if there was any particular items you recommend getting for deployment. I thought perhaps there are some useful things i'll need that aren't necessarily general knowledge. Thanks, I started writing a response to this and it got to be so long that I got to thinking. I'm sure there are a ton of guys out there that have similar questions. I know I did. Bring a digital camera with a pelican case. Get a good camera. You'll be taking lots of pic and vids. And get a pelican 1010 case. That's usually the right size for most point and click cameras. Don't buy a big camera though, stay compact. I have an Olympus 720 Waterproof/Shockproof compact camera. It was a present ... read more

March was an interesting month. The first significant thing that happened was that I hurt my knee doing PT (Physical Training). It didn’t seem too bad, so I finished my workout. Bad idea! I was at sick call the next morning. Doc told me to rest it and stay away from lower body PT. My squad leader sent me back to sick call a few days later, and doc put me on a 10 day “light duty” profile, but my commanding officer sent my out on a multi-day mission that day. It wasn’t a tough mission. Mostly, I just walked around and checked on people at a patrol base. It wasn’t too hard on my knee except when I step on uneven ground at night. We were out at the patrol base with the scouts, ... read more

Hello Friends, It has been an eventful month. Promoted I was promoted to Sergeant (SGT) on Jan 1. That's a big step in the Army. That's when you go from being a soldier to a leader of soldiers. In the Army, SGT is considered a non-commissioned officer (NCO). When you become an NCO, your status changes to reflect the leadership position that you probably already fill. Typically, a SGT is responsible for four enlisted soldiers, which mya not seem like much; but with all the stuff we do both in the field and back on the FOB, keeping track of four guys can be a handfull. Wounded While pulling security on a mission this month, we took enemy small arms and machine gun fire. I obviously can't tell you all the details, but I was shot ... read more

So, the internet on our office went out. No good at all. I'm borrowing someone else's right now, and I dont know if we'll ever get it up again, so there will be a serious lack of posts for a while. Hopefully we get something figured out soon. It's gonna drive me crazy. But, things are good, we're gonna be on the Super Bowl, so everyone watch CBS and look out for us! I think that's it, sorry I wont be able to post more often. Miss everyone!!!... read more
