Day 9
Today was one awesome day. It was one of the things I was looking forward to the most. The day started with a short bus ride to the train station. We took the train through all of the 5 cities on the Cinque Terra getting a short glimpse at all of them as we passed through. The 5 cities are on a coast line that stretches kinda south east to north west, the locals just call it east and west. So we started in the city on the east side., All the cites are built into the cliffs and ravines along the coast. We visited 4 of the 5 cities and it was amazing. We started in Riomaggiore and then walked the "pathway of love" over to Manarola. It was a very nice short little walk along a well maintained path. We then wandered Manarola for a bit and grabbed a bite to eat. Then we took the train, bypassing Corniglia and arriving in Vernazza. Here most of the group had a quick stop and walked up and down the main street and headed back on the train with our tour guide to Monterosso to go to the beach.
I stayed with Heather in Vernazza for some alone time and a nice dinner. The place I wanted to go was closed, as are most restaurants from 4-7, so we found a nice pizza place and had a nice dinner together. We all met up in Monterosso for sunset and a walk through the streets. We then headed back to the bus on the train and back to the hotel. It was a great day. I will let a few photos try and give you an idea of how beautiful it is.
Day 10
Today was mostly a transfer day. We drove a short hour to Genoa where Vania our tour guide gave a a nice walking tour of the city. We visited among other things a house said to be the birth place of Columbus and several cathedrals. We then continued on to Monaco. after an hour road construction delay, we made it to the tiny little country. We visited the old city where the palace and cathedral are, then drove down to the casino area. We enjoyed spotting all the giant yachts in the harbor and fancy cars all over the city. For me it was walking
Riomaggiore
Heather overlooking Riomaggiore the streets of the Grand Prix of Monte Carlo that was the best. I grew up watching that and to drive and walk some of those streets was great. We then took a short stop at a perfume factory and gift shop and then arrived in Nice. We at at a restaurant downtown, and then some of the group went back to the hotel and I led some of the group on a walk down to the beach and then up the main shopping drag. The highlight seemed to be skipping rocks and watching the dancing street performers.
All in all another fine day. Till next time.
