In Appleby in Westmoreland. Shortly before we realised we'd gone the wrong way
Gareth's knee pain reached its nadir, almost causing him to puke on the last Dales miles, to Kirkby Stephen. We thought the smell of our clothes may have contributed, but cycling naked wasn't an option we were prepared to entertain.

Neverthless, he soldiered on. Meanwhile Rolfe and I enjoyed another day of imposing fells and dales, streams and villages. A fortuitous wrong turn took us into the centre of Appleby-in-Westmoreland, a pretty market town. Gareth's knee support was a source of amusement for the locals of the Lowther Arms in Penrith, where we had lunch. Lunch without chips, for possibly the first time.

With the glorious Dales behind us, and the wisely avoided gradients of Lake District to our left, we made our way to Longtown, just north of Carlisle, close to the border. Longtown has been the scene of many battles, between Romans and Scots, English and Scots, and modern day folk and obesity.

67 miles, some more beautiful scenery. And arrival at our destination before 5pm!

Past halfway - all down hill from there
Well done gents - keep up the good work. Claire's Dad sends his best wishes and encouragement and the good news that you're well past half way and - believe it or not - it gets a LOT easier going through Scotland. (around mountains not over hills!) He said he would DEFINITELY recommend going on the National Cycle Network route 7 and 77 between Tweed and Inverness - nice gradients and amazing scenery. He also said keep drinking that water!!! Like your chip fethish by the way. All the best, Matt

Gareth's hanging basket order
Sorry to hear about your knee. I have your hanging basket to deliver. Do you want me to get it couriered to Scottish borders so you can mount it on your handlebars to enjoy it's magnificient blooms (might take your mind off the pain). Alternatively Emma P will be looking after it until you return. Keep it going lads. All the best. Luckett.
