Plot:
A financial investor has disappeared after having cheated almost half of the population of Vigàta of millions of euros.

Montalbano investigates when investor Emanuele Gargano disappears with the savings entrusted to him by the people of Montelusa.

His inquiries bring him into contact with the missing man's staff, including his obsessively loyal secretary Mariastella Cosentino and the provocative Michela Manganaro.

Augello gets cold feet about his wedding. Salvo is distracted in this episode by Mimi's love life, by an olive tree which someone has cut down on his beach and Tunisian orphan François.
