Today Monica, Alison, Whitney and I caught the bus to the part of town called Rottingdean. It actually used to be a little town but it got taken in as a part of Brighton at some point. It is such a neat little town though. It’s almost like if you just took the cars away you’d think you went like 300 years back in time. There are all these old houses made out of the flint rock that is most common around here………and they all line these little curvy roads—some of which are still cobbled. We got to see the house Rudyard Kipling lived in while he was writing The Jungle Book. We weren’t allowed to go into it but his gardens are open to the public so we walked through them. We also found a little museum about the town. Apparently that area and its people were very involved in Britain’s World War efforts and Rudyard Kipling lived in the area for a very long time. We also went and walked around the old church in the town…….it is beautiful. The sun was actually out today so we walked around the cemetery outside and looked at the

dates on some of the stones. They were so old…….you can’t see any writing on some of them anymore. In the church there were also some stained glass windows by Edward Burn Jones…..a fairly famous artist that was a resident of the town for a good part of his life. About mid- afternoon we went to a tea house called Trellis that was established in 1680……….we had proper English tea and scones. It was fun. We also stopped by The Ye Olde Black Horse pub that was established in 1513 but we had spent a long time in the tea house and only really had time to look around and take a picture at the pub--- we wanted to make sure to get to the water at sundown. We walked down to the water and saw the famous White Cliffs……we weren’t quite in Dover but they’re just as pretty here. The water was so pretty at sunset……we took some great pictures. Once the sun starts setting around here it happens pretty quickly so we were only on the beach for about 20 min. We caught the bus back to the University and just hung out for the rest of the

night. I think the four us plan on going back in the Spring though b/c Kipling’s garden is suppose to be absolutely beautiful and they also will have the little town pond redone by then…….it should be really pretty.
What I miss: sunlight until at least 5 or 6
What I love: tea and scones!
