Penultimate carrot cake
Look what Lufthanse gave us for pudding on our flight from Cairo! To take us to Cairo airport, we ordered a proper taxi - one with working doors and a boot that opened. Needless to say it didn't turn up. When Willy phone to inquire as to its whereabouts, they just hung up on him and when I tried, I spoke to three different people and they finally decided that the taxi had broken down en route and no other taxi was available. We went out and got a normal taxi ie a battered black and white one and sat with our packs on our laps, which was fine.
Our flight took off on time and off we sped to Germany. The plane had about 30 passengers and about 130 seats, so, after the meal, Willy took the whole of the central row (4 seats) and lifted up the armrests and had a sleep, waking only when the captain told everyone to fasten their seat belts and prepare for for landing.
We had a 2 hour stopover in Frankfurt airport, so we found an ATM, took out some Euros and had a proper German coffee.
Over the last few months we have discovered that we definitely have a European
Frankfurt airport.
This is Willy - happy to be back in Europe outlook on the world. For instance, if we travel 1000km, we expect to have been in at least one, if not two or three other countries and will almost certainly have been in at least one major city that has its own distinctive identity.
Then we boarded our final flight - just a quick two hour hop from Frankfurt to Edinburgh. Edinburgh was damp and cool, so I changed out of the flip flops I have lived in for the last two months and put on a jacket. A taxi arrived and we sped towards Threemiletown - at least we sped as far as the garage at Glendevon, just 1.5 miles from home. There had been a bad accident and the police had closed the road, so we had to make a 5 mile detour, but we did get home. Thence, after a slice of the carrot cake that had miraculously appeared on the kitchen table, (thanks Lorraine) to bed in our own bed - that's the 6th time we've changed beds in the last week and the 86th since we left 155 days ago.
It's been a great trip and loads of people have helped with it:
Last Carrot Cake of the Trip
This one was sitting on the kitchen table when we got home... Frances, Brian and Bella, Christine and Lesley all fed us and gave us a bed in New Zealand, as well as offering advice about the best places to go.
John and Noelene gave us our Australian itinerary as well as lending us lots of maps, advising we hired a car with air-conditioning (really good advice!).
Roger and Vicki looked after us in Bundaberg and showed us our first kangaroos.
Cara joined us in Australia after we'd spent 24 hours a day together for the best part of three months and it was really good to spend time with someone different.
In Cairo, Courtney gave up her bed for us and Yvonne suggested loads of places for us to visit and even organised a personal travel agent for us.
Meanwhile back in Scotland, Gavin & Niome looked after the car through the winter -and it still works fine. Lorraine looked after our post and collected the parcels of unneeded clothes and souvenirs that we posted to ourselves from far-flung post offices.
Anyway hope you've all enjoyed "Our Trip" we certainly did (and after all that time, we're still talking to each other).
We had our first "discussion" about a Europe trip in the autumn today.
