I didn't have to be anywhere today until 10:30, when we walked to the National Gallery of Scotland. There wasn't anything particularly interesting there. I saw a few paintings I recognized. Most of the things we saw were used to torture criminals and people accused of practicing witchcraft, but these I think are all devices used by husbands to punish their wives. The thing in the corner is a chastity belt, which soldiers would put on their wives before they went off to war. But if her husband was killed in battle, the woman would be stuck in this thing forever unless she could find a blacksmith of some sort willing to help her remove it. Also, back then it was difficult to tell when a woman was in the early stages of pregnancy. Often men who were unaware that their wives were pregnant would put this belt on them, leaving them to either miscarry or die at some point in the next nine months.
