On Saturday, we were on the road again on the Isle of Skye... First we had to see the sites then it was the monstrous drive to Oban. We first took in a couple of the little tourist stops... the first was a tannery that made sheep skins, you may see one of these in our living room one day. The second was a place that died yarn with natural dies found only in nature... not all that exciting. After that it was onto Dunvegan castle to take in the home of the MacLeod's. Occupied pretty much throughout its 800 year history (including today), the castle is a pretty interesting view on clan life today and in the past. For all you single girls(Tracy), the clan Chief is married, but who knows, he is under forty and these guys tend to keep their options open. After Dunvegan it was the big drive to Oban; More Scottish roads and a lot of great scenery. Once in Oban we relaxed at a waterfront seafood restaurant, which just happened to be called the Waterfront.
Since there is not a whole lot to do in Oban on a Sunday(their pretty religious in those parts)
we decided to take a tour out to the islands of Mull and Iona via the local ferry service(more boats). It just so happens that so did every senior citizen within the United Kingdom(OK I exagerate, but there were a lot of grey hairs(sorry mom)). That aside we made out to Iona which is a small island just off the larger island of Mull. Iona is special as it hosted the start of Christianity in Scotland through the establishment of St. Columba's monastery, and has an ancient Abby built in the 1200's. It also has a graveyard were some 40 plus Scottish kings are buried(including Macbeth). Since we're definitely in the tours minority we also took the opportunity to use our youthfulness and out stroll our counterparts to make the trek to the other side of the island. It was well worth it as we we're treated to more white beaches (with sheep on them of course) and pretty much no one else around. We ate our bag lunch (purchased for 4.25 pounds on the ferry) and relaxed. We didn't get to see much of the island of Mull as we were driven straight to Iona via single lane roads
on a bus. One piece of trivia for all you buffs out there is that Mull has a little town on it called Calgary... yes the one our little town is named after.
Today was a travel day only... we booted it across Scotland from Oban to Perth then to Glenrothes(that's where we lived when I was young, we even found our old house) then finally to Edinburgh. Edinburgh was a complete gong show as they have half the city ripped up putting in a new tram system. Anyway we made it.... only 2 more full days here then we’re off.
