As I drove home Thursday exhausted and in denial that there was still one day left in the workweek I contemplated my options. One, pretend that I forgot today was our ten-year wedding anniversary and beg for forgiveness. Two, stop, initiate the hunt for a parking spot and buy some flowers and a card. Or three come in the door with nothing and profess that no gift in the world could demonstrate my love on this fine day. I went with option three and having the wonderful wife that I do, she understood. I professed my love, had a drink and was asleep by 9:00.
Although our anniversary may have been a bit lackluster, we had another incredible weekend. After completing my first full week of school, we went to the local and had a couple of Guinness. Oddly enough, every time I have been there I have met retired teachers or active teachers. Now that may not seem so odd in itself, but every time I have been in there, there has only been two or three other people there.
Saturday we woke up and headed to Edinburgh. This was the closing weekend of the Edinburgh Festival. It
is a three-week festival that showcases music, comedy, film, street theater, etc. from all around the world. With hundreds of venues around the city something was happening on every corner. The city was gorgeous. Beautiful parks, churches, buildings and sculptures abounded. We had plans to meet up with Jen, another teacher on exchange when we arrived. She has a great flat in the heart of the city. We stopped in, said hi and then went out to see the sights. We walked some of the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is one street that runs from Edinburgh Castle to Parliament. While walking we saw lots of different acts. The highlight: a man lying on a bed of nails and having a man smash a brick on his stomach with a sledgehammer!
After a walk down the Royal Mile we went to the Scotland National Museum. A six-story museum that you would need a week to take in. Camille loved the interactive exhibits. On the walk afterwards Camille fell asleep and mom and dad were forced to sit at a sidewalk café, eat goat cheese tortillas and drink a bottle of wine. We thought she’d never wake up. It was
terrible!
After that we got back in touch with Jen, enjoyed a nice dinner and then went to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The show featured military bands from around the world along with a couple of other acts. The show takes place right outside the Edinburgh Castle. The bands come out the front door, if you can call it that, and out into the courtyard. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Watching the moonrise over the hills, fireworks exploding over the castle and a beautiful evening sky made the evening all the more special. It was a truly spectacular evening.
Today we woke up, thanked Jen for having us and walked the city some more. We headed down to Holyrood Park and hiked to the top of the crags overlooking the city. The views were incredible; the city, the Firth of Forth, Arthur’s Saddle and the Queen’s residence in Edinburgh were just a sprinkling of what you could see.
Until next weekend……
