Week 4 - Devon and London
We had a wonderful week with Karen's cousin Dee and Jim. Their hospitality has been fantastic and we will both have many enduring memories of our time in Devon in spite of the weather.
The whole area fascinated me. From the narrow windy lanes that run between the villages to the extremely old and varied architecture. We even managed to see where Karen's parents first met!
Managed to have dinner wiith Auntie Joy and Uncle Marwood at their home - I admired Marwoods garden - he takes such pride in it.
We spent a very long day travelling with Jim and Dee down to Plymouth. Visited the Hoe (promenade) and then The Barbican were the Mayflower left in 1620 to sail to the Americas. I also found out that Captain Cook sailed from Plymouth on his voyages of discovery. We had short stop at Charlestown were we saw three tall ships moored to tiny wharf.
We then went on to the Eden Project just outside Plymouth. This is a ecological self-sustaining project- it has a tropical area as well as other areas growing all different types of vegetation. The
Seaton Beach
Do you like the lovely pebble beach! whole project is setup in an old chalk mine. This huge project was setup in 2000 and the plant growth has been quite fantastic.
During our return to Beer we travelled across Dartmoor and saw the fascinating ponies and sheep that run free across the moor. We also saw Dartmoor Prison - what a depressing place. Probably a perfect place for a prison.
As we drove along, I was struck by the incongruity of the situation - a Scotsman (Jim) driving a French car with Two Aussies across the moors in Cornwall singing Irish songs!
We also managed a lovely walk down the main street of Beer. Then off to Seaton for another walk.Dropped in to see Auntie Anne for afternoon tea.
Karen and I were very sad to leave Devon. The week was sensational!
We caught the bus back to London - a short 4 hour trip in a full bus with a smelly toilet. I cant complain as the bus fare was only 12 pounds for both of us. We did have a pompous pommie git sitting behind us who was constantly on his mobile phone trying to find someone who go out
Country Lanes
How high are the hedges!! for a few beers.
In London we stayed at The Grosvenor Hotel in Buckingham Palace Road. An old world but very comfotable and enjoyable hotel right next to Victoria Station. We stayed for a couple of nights and then had to change hotels prior to our european tour.
The new hotel remined me of Goldilocks - the first room was too hot, the second room had noisy air conditioning, but the third room was just right!
We have to hit the cot early tonight - we have a 4:30am wakeup call so that we can start our european tour.
Well thats it for this week. Next week we will be somewhere in Europe!
Bye for now
