English in the UK differs from American English - and not only in the accent in which it is spoken. Many words in British English and American English are similar but have different meanings. This entry will (hopefully) be added to as the year progresses. British English words will be listed followed by their meaning and/or American English counterpart.

Gate = Viking word for street; example: Petergate = Peter Street
Chips = French Fries
Crisps = Potato Chips
Toilet, Water Closet = Bathroom
Duck/duckie = Term of endearment/respect
Queue = Line
Module = Class
Scheme = Opportunity or program
Pavement = Sidewalk
Lorries = Semi-Trucks
Lift = Elevator
