The first challenge of this new day was to actually get up and out of bed, the place we had been staying was excellent in every way except for the fact we weren’t allowed any heating on in the cottage we were staying in! We were able to convince the lady in charge that we could have 45 minutes of heating the previous evening but that was the end of any use for the radiators!
Once I was up and fully clothed it was down to breakfast which was extremely good, the usual debate as to what to wear for the day on the hill had meant Pete packing and unpacking my day sack about 5 times in the space of 10 minutes; I guess he loves me!!
We had James taking us today which was good and it was dry, another good aspect to the day so far.....then a short period into the walk a quite serious hill presented itself before me!! The only plus point was that we were following a road so at least the terrain was easy, Pete let me hold Jess who was leashes so she pretty much pulled me up most of the
hill. Puppy power really does work!!
The climb continued from road onto track and then into the exposed expanse of Cumbrian moorland towards our first goal which was the 9 standards, a collection of high stone structures that no one really knows why they were built. The climb was hard not as challenging as what had come before in the Lake District but I still managed at least 1 melt down!
Once at the top we had a quick snack then it was off across the very boggy ground to our lunch stop and shortly our crossing into the Yorkshire Dales, I reminded everyone to have their passports to hand as it was Yorkshire we were going to enter after all!!
The going was tough, very tough but more because I didn’t want to disappear into some bog than because of any steep ground it seemed every step I took could potentially lead me into a quagmire up to my knees!! At least the weather was very pleasant despite a chilly wind the sun was up giving us periods of warmth and it was dry!!
Once in the Dales we had a stretch of road to
cover as we had decided to miss out the boggiest part of the route as it was supposed to be up to our waists at points; our guide quite rightly didn’t see any point in us going through that! Then it was off the road and back onto the trail amongst the rolling countryside which made for a pleasant hike.
Todays trip was scheduled at 12.5 miles but we ended up doing slightly more due to missing out the bog route, by the time we got to our accommodation I was totally knackered and absolutely spent! The warmth of our guest houses boot room was very well received by everyone! This Coast to Coast Trek is a lot tougher than I thought and I already knew it was going to be tough! My feet are blistered, my knees ache and my muscles feel like I am being pulled apart on a rack.....but you know what I’m loving it, with my hubby I’m doing this challenge and learning a lot about myself along the way, making new friends and seeing some awesome country that no photo can possibly do justice for! I wouldn’t change a thing so far and right
now as I type this I’m at the halfway point!!
