Whilst in Haworth, Yorkshire, we decided on the Saturday to visit Skipton, the home of the best-preserved medieval castles in England in spite of a three year seige during the Civil War. For centuries the market town of Skipton was hidden for safe keeping beneath the castle walls where successive Lords of Skipton are buried in the Parish Church, the most famous being George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland, one of her Admirals agains the Armada. The road from Haworth to Skipton is straightforward, through a series of roundabouts and well sign-posted. There was no car-parking around the castle itself but the market town has ample car parking around by the canal. We visited on a Saturday and there were only a few market stalls beside the canal. Leaving Windermere on our way to York, via Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales and Thirsk, home of James Herriot. The weather was quite grey and rainy all day. In Skipton, there was a market day in the streets: very crowded. We stopped in a shop to get Allison a sweater, and visited a church just a block from the market. Then we headed to Thirsk and "The World of James Herriot". We got somewhat lost on our way there, but Allison got us back on track with her map reading skills. Jeff only hit the left side curb a couple times (once rather roughly!). The James Herriot Centre was the real house that he lived and practiced in - Skeldale House. If anyone has watched Calendar Girls before, some of the movie takes place here. :) There was a really well preserved castle here, though I realized I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked (I think I was busy recording it on video...and my dad was playing with his new toy throughout, lol :) ).
