The Rest of the group
From Left to Right, Nog, Scott, Derrick, Tim and Kev 6-am saw me getting out of bed on this Mayday bank holiday and walking the dog. Actually I’d been awake since 5-am because I’d set the alarm wrong and kept hitting the snooze button for an hour. Once back home I had a bit of a snackette just to have something inside me to take me up to my breakfast after the ride through to Scarborough. I wheeled my Honda VFR750 out of the garage, please that I’d sorted the problem with the headlamps the night before. Putting it on the main stand I gave the chain a liberal dose of chain lube and checked the adjustment. I would have liked the bike to be a little bit cleaner but time was against me, apart from calling for fuel and checking the tyre pressures I was ready to set off to meet up with the other members of the Three Shires branch of the Honda Owners Club at MacDonald’s, at the M18 Junction 1.
Arriving around 8:10-am at MacDonald’s Kev and Nog were already there with Derrick Tim and Scott turning up just after me. A pot of tea and I was ready for off but first a quick
Sand Sculpture
I’ve seen these Sand Sculptures before and I’m really impressed with the skill and workmanship that goes into them. This one looks like it’s going to become a Dragon or maybe The Loch Ness Monster. Unfortunately time was against us and we had to head for home with out seeing it completed. look at Scott’s bike, a 21-year old Honda CX650 V Twin. With 6 of us in the group we set off only to be separated by the traffic lights but with the 3 of us who were at the back with adequate power we soon caught the first 3 up on the motorway. Our route took us from junction 1, M18 north to the M62 then onto Howden were we left the motorway on the A614 towards Driffield, then taking the B1249 to Scarborough.
Arriving in Scarborough, we rode around the to the south end of the marine drive where we parked up and walked a short distance to a Breakfast bar and a welcome Bacon and Egg in a roll for me with a pot of tea. After this we took a walk along the front and soon came to a sand sculpture of what was looking to finally turn out like a Dragon and was been done in aid of “children in need”. After watching the sculptures for a while we crossed the road and headed back to our bikes… then things got interesting!!!
Derrick wanted to call and see friend in East Ayrton and so
Nessy's Head
Could this really be the Lock Ness monster on the beach? we set off along Marine Drive to make the call. Soon we seemed to grind to a halt at a junction with Lightfoot road. Coincidence? Derrick’s surname is Lightfoot. A local gentleman gave us directions and once again we were on the move, Derrick seemed to know where we were going but as we came into East Ayrton we made a right turn into a Cul-de-sac and again ground to a halt. In turn we all turned around and regrouped back on the main road and set off again. Our next right turn took us in the right direction but just to edge Derrick’s bet he stopped and confirmed his route with a local. We arrived at derrick’s friends and while he exchanged pleasantries we discussed our route back to South Yorkshire. I made a suggeston and was elected leader, (“one step forward that man”)
We’d decided to travel across the A170 to Pickering then on to Malton picking up the A64 to York then the A19 to Selby then across to Snaith, Rawcliffe and then picking up the M18 at Thorne. I saw several signs saying Malton before we got to Pickering and wondered if I should have changed the route but no, we’d said Pickering so that’s where I was heading. Turning left at the round about in Pickering we headed to the Malton bypass where we hit heavy traffic right through to the York bypass (I should have know better than to go this way because I know what the A64’s like on a bank holiday weekend).
Scott and Derrick dropped out just before the York bypass stopping for a drink. Nog and I left the A64 onto the A19 while Kev and Tim continued I assume to the A1 then M1 towards Sheffield. At the round-about Nog and I had a quick word about where the others had gone and I decided to head back on to the A64 and catch the other two up, but I got the wrong exit of the round-about and ended up in a retail outlet area which called for a turn around and back to the A19. Nog headed right down the A19 and to the Selby Bypass, I followed. At one of the roundabout’s Nog seemed a bit unsure of the route and waved me in front, I continued down the A19 towards Askern where we pulled up at the level crossing. Nog asked me where we were heading and I said through Askern then turning right for Carcroft and joining the A1 at Skellow. Once on the A1 I gestured to Nog that I’d be leaving at the A635 Junction (37) for home. Nog exited as well and followed me along the A635 then onto the A6195 Dearne Valley Parkway until we finally parted at the Wath road roundabout where I turned right for the very short ride to home.
I got home about 13:40 and was greeted by my wife saying “Where have you been, I thought you were working tonight”, “my reply was yes I am” and I headed to bed to get a couple of hours sleep before driving the truck down to Dartford and back later that evening.
I really enjoyed my day out although it didn’t go quite to plan and if I had to award a “Rider of the day award” it would definitely go to Scott, who with the smallest capacity and oldest bike really kept up with the pace.
