Woke up so excited to see Anna and Jon today!!
They arrived at 9:30 in their chariot (a Nissan Note) to pick us up to take us into the English countryside!
Will start on the monument to Anna straight away as she brought along my new credit card, so glad to be back in the 20th century.
On the way we pass Windsor Castle in the distance.
Drove to country pub for lunch in Turville Village - this is where the Vicor of Dibley is set and some movies including 101 Dalmations and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were filmed. Lunch was great, a full Sunday Roast dinner, Pork for Tim and Anna and Fish for Jon and I. Surprisingly (for England, haha) it’s really sunny and we sit outside.
Everything is so green here in the country, unlike Hyde Park!
Some of the roads are so narrow driving that only one car can fit and when another somes the opposite way we pretty much have to pull over to let the other one through, so happy to be chauffeur driven through here! It seems some people (most likely tourists I’m guessing..) seem to think that
the road is theirs and everyone else will pull over as if by magic, again, I’m glad Jon is driving!
Drove to Hambeldon village where Jon’s family lived and where Anna and Jon met when Anna was working in pub. Had a walk through this old village and everything is relaxed and everyone is cheerful. One person owns pretty much the whole village and leases the houses out to the people.
Everyone remembered them still and you could tell they were well liked, even though Jon was the bad boy!
Drove back to our hotel, had a drink and then went in search of somewhere to watch the World Cup grand final.
Had dinner in Piccadilly Circus. There’s a big screen TV in the square promoting the game, loads of people sitting on statue in middle of square waiting for game to start so we figure we have the prime spot for tea and can see game at the same time!
Now we’re finally back in an English speaking country and we end up with a waitress that can’t understand English! Murphy’s law!
After the game start time came and went, we realised
that only score updates were going to be shown on big screen. Eventually everyone standing on the centre statue realised too and pretty soon the crowd dissipated.
Had a bit of a hunt for a pub, no luck so went back to hotel as they had two TV’s set up in bar. Can’t believe in London it’s so hard to find a pub! Hotel was good though, made better by the company, shame today went so quick. But lucky Anna and Jon are off to Spain tomorrow!
Spain scored only goal in last 5 minutes of extra time - bugga! Tims team may have won, but Holland is still the best!
Anna and Jon left after game to drive to Gatwick to stay the night before flying to Spain tomorrow.
Great catch up!!
