Edit Blog Post
Hi everyone,
I was going to wait to write a new blog until after I have had all of my classes for the first time, but it just so happens I have some time on my hands now!!
Lets start with my class schedule...it is still a little tentative, I picked up a class on Mondays with a discussion on Tuesdays, which stinks for when I travel because I have 2 important classes on Friday I can't-and won't often miss if I can help it. I may pick up Intro to Knitting!! 😊
As of now, I have a class on
Monday 9-11 am, Intro to Forensic Psychology
Tuesday 12-1 discusion for Intro to For. Psych
3-5 Psychology of Evidence
Wednesday, no classes
Thursday 1-3 Applied Forensic Psychology, Offenders in Secure and Community Settings
Friday 11-1 Psychology of Violent Behavior
1-3 Profiling Offenders
Apparently I have to talk to my professors for the classes on Friday and explain I have classes right after another so they will hopefully let me out early/come in late because of the time difference...and the classes aren't all that close to each other.
The classes themselves aren't too bad, we
started the real class becuase we only meet once a week and for such a long time, we had to get something done the first week. Good news, all of the teachers (most of them I should say) I am told put their notes up online through the school websites, so if I miss something in lecture I am covered. They all speak so quickly and I am still not used to the accents! I am sure I will not have trouble after a week or two...at least I hope!!
On to other things...I have made friends with the other international kids as I call them, and we travel and go out in a huge group...we call it the posse. LIterally, at any given time we may have 5, 10, 15, 20, or 15 people out together. Makes it hard in pubs! Good thing we order at the bar though, and they just call out the meals when they serve it. Not too bad! One weird thing here, they don't tip the servers or barmen as they call them. The way they see it, no one tips the cops or the bus drivers or store workers for doing their
job, why should we tip the pub workers? This is valuable insight I learned from a Englishman I met one night out, a fellow student at uni (university) with us. It was quite fun talking to the group of them really. They made fun of me for saying my name 'Cassie' the American way, and not 'Cossie' the English way. Awesome, right?
Hmmmmm ok....oh yeah. The group of us have dinner together, sometimes two other girls and I make dinner for everyone, well...lets be honest. I am told what to do to help, because I mess things up as some of you know quite well. Any rate, we are talking about going to Edinburgh this weekend, so we will see how it goes trying to get a huge group of people travelling together. I doubt it will work very well actually. There is an International Student Society, apparently they plan the trips and we all just sign up and go. That might be very much easier to go in big groups too, and less headache planning a big trip! We will see!
The town of Preston is really very fun, there are lots of pubs and takeout places
and restaurants and shops close by. It can be a bit of a walk, but everyone walks and it's not as far as things would be in Columbus or Lexington. Having a car is not a necessity...very good thing! There is a really great night life, somewhere to go everynight including the uni bar, The Source which has karaoke, dance clubs, and pubs. My personal favorite is called The Guild, they have the football (soccer) games on and they don't mind it when the huge group of us comes in...I think they might actually enjoy it! We are on a first name basis already with a lot of the staff. Since we are such a big group,
Today my new flatmate Aubrey, another American who lived across the hall but moved into my flat the other day, Harry, Dave, Jory and Elizabeth and I all went around town together. We looked into the bank account thing, and we looked into or some actually were able to get these rail passes that give us mega discounts when we travel by rail around the UK and a few other companies. We went together to get some clothes, I myself majorly needed
some new jeans and batteries for my camera! We ate some dinner at a pub called the Witherspoon and met some nice locals, they are a group of older people who go there regularly. One of them, a man named Jack walked over to us and handed us a big stack of coupons or vouchers they are called to use at the place. It was great! All of the people are so nice, especially the older people, not students. They don't mind us asking questions or giving us suggestions for places to eat or shop or whatever. I don't think we could be having any better of an experience here!!
That's pretty much all I can think of...in my next entry I will dedicate a section to the funny words they say here and the words we should NOT say here from home!! Stay tuned!
Love and miss you all!
Love,
Cass
