Bernie’s birthday today, so I let him choose what we would do for the day. He decided on a visit to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester. TomTom guided us to the museum brilliantly. Despite it being bank holiday Monday it was reasonably quiet at the museum. With the weather being so good most people probably opted to head for the coast or the country rather than a museum in the city?! We checked out the temporary exhibition area first and looked at their newly opened display dedicated to prisoners or war. Next we proceeded to the permanent exhibition area which is really well laid out in a chronological time-line starting with WWI, then WWII, Korean and Vietnamese wars through to present day conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq.
After the museum we went up to the viewing platform in the shard - an architectural feature of the war museum building. The view were quite good out over the shipping canal although somewhat obstructed as the viewing area is still inside the shard rather than being an open air viewing platform. I’m sure we got out 95 pence worth!
Next we crossed the canal and walked around the Salford
Quays. After venturing all the way to Trafford Road we went back through the factory outlets at the Lowry Centre. We didn’t do much shopping - it was Bernie’s day after all. As we came out of the Lowry Centre the bridge over the canal was lifting up so we walked briskly down to the canal just in time to witness a cruise boat going up the canal. Then we had to wait until the bridge was back in place before we could cross back to the side of the canal where the car was parked.
Back in Stalybridge we discovered that Colin and Lucy were up and a few drinks had been consumed leaving Kath feeling unlike cooking. Not to worry, Indian food was ordered. Bernie sat down to dinner saying that he wasn’t feeling too good. He decided to soldier on and ate his Indian entrée. Maybe not the best idea if one is feeling delicate? Anyway, after eating that amount of food he decided that he might go and lie down. Not such a great way to end a birthday - especially when all you’ve had to drink is a can and a half of beer!!
The rest of us totally pigged out on Indian Food since Bernie wasn’t there to eat his share!
After Colin and Lucy left we tidied up the leftovers and the dishes and sat down to watch ‘George Gently’. I think I would have enjoyed it - if I could have stayed awake! I headed off to be at about 10.00pm to find that Bernie had been hot and shivery but was, on the whole, feeling much better than when he had gone upstairs to have a lie down. I have my fingers crossed that I do not come down with whatever nasty little virus he has.
So, we were quite a bit more active today, but I don’t really know how active as the pedometer is still a no go!
