I woke so excited – Davina had accidently told us that Miranda was flying in from Brussels to attend a BBQ that she and Kelly were holding that day, so that we could catch up! I haven't seen Miranda, my oldest friend, since G was a baby, although we talk regularly on the phone – I couldn't wait to show her my beautiful kids and to catch up with her!
But, the way these things tend to go – when Tom woke up, the sores on his leg (a recurrence of the school sores he had the week that we left Australia) had flared, and we thought it better to deal with the NHS rather than try my school girl French to see if I could translate "impetigo" in French! We were lucky and found a NHS run clinic, where for a cash fee of 50 quid, they were willing to see Tom immediately. He and I trekked across to St Pancras, where the first year Indian Doctor was very receptive to me turning up and saying that my sister, the dermatologist on the other side of the world, recommended x drug, thanks!
By the time Tom and I had
made it back to Islington and Kelly's (taking the chance to have an adventure and go on both the tube AND a real London cab), Miranda had arrived, and Caroline Wolton wasn't far behind! It was so good to see them both – and in both cases, they haven't changed at all! It is wonderful how with very dear friends, the years apart just melt away and all the old jokes and camaraderie reappears so quickly. Don't know what the kids thought, though – hoping a bit of the discussion went above their heads! The boys were more than happy to wander in and out of the BBQ, grazing on sausages and coleslaw, whilst spending time watching Tom and Jerry cartoons. But G was absolutely in love! One of Davina's friends brought her 4 month old Cavalier puppy (who looked so much like our Rosie!) and Georgia just cuddled that pup (Archie!) for the entire day!
We had a lovely BBQ with our friends – it was so wonderful of Kelly & Davina to organize it (especially as I know they are both very busy with work) and so wonderful to see everyone again.
By 5pm, when all the guests had
gone, we decided we should show the kids something of London other than the Islington back garden, so we headed off to the Tube station and into central London – we got off at Green Park and showed them Daddy's old office, then across Green Park (lots of squirrels for chasing) to Buckingham Palace and the Mall, then down the Mall to the new memorial to the Queen Mother (summarizing her life as 1. The blitz, 2. Horse racing and 3. The corgis!), across to Piccadilly Circus (where we lost Matthew for a heart stopping nano-second!) and onto a tube home. What a long day!
