Hey everyone
Hope you all had a nice Easter break and managed to soak up some sunshine. The weather here wasn't that great - we were lucky to get blessed with gale force winds (oh sweet memories of home) down in Cornwall, and ended up missing out on the snow that fell in London. Boohoo :-( But I wouldn't give up snow for the beach that's for sure!!
We drove down to Trevone Bay near Padstow which is a very well known fishing village on Thursday night in our zippy little Nissan Note that we hired, along with Tim's friends Anton and Katie. I had booked us a holiday house for the weekend right next to the beach and I have to say that the house definitely exceeded my expectations.
First thing Friday morning I got up before everyone else and went for a walk down the beach. It was absolutely blowing a gale, but I was determind to feel the sand beneath my feet! Problem was that I had to roll up my jeans and the sand was getting blown all over the place that it stung my legs, and then my feet started to hurt because
Our house
Our pad for the weekend - bottom floor only - but it was just perfect! it was so cold....not a wise move.....because then I couldn't put my Ugg boots back on! Doh! Later on we took a drive into Padstow to check out the local shops. This little village is very quaint but was absolutely bustling with people as it seems to be the "it" place to go on the weekend. Now any visit to Cornwall means that you have to eat a Cornish Pastie and taste some of their delicious fudge. I had a Steak and Ale pastie - but to be honest I couldn't rate it, but the fudge, oh my god, it just melted in your mouth - it was just amazing! We bought a kite and a cricket set and then stocked up on some groceries - and alcohol of course! That night we had a feast of Fajitas and had some bevvies - I taught them the headbands game and spoons (for those who know our old drinking games), which proved to be a laugh. But the more we drank the more sober we got, so we ended up calling it a night quite early - what old fuddy duddies huh!!
Saturday we took a trip down to Newquay
which is famous for it's surfing and the town is filled with surf schools, surf stores, surf pods, surfing accommodation, surfers....the list goes on! But with the swells that were charging in, there was not one person out - I don't blame them to be honest, it was pretty horrible. We did a tiki tour around, had some hot chips (which by the way aren't fun to eat in gale force winds) and then wandered the shops. We ended up going home and then coming back later so we could hit the town with our local guide Anton as he has spent loads of time here as he surfs. He took us to Belushi's which was very interesting to say the least. Everyone inside looked very "different" and a band was setting up that looked like they were going to perform heavy metal - I think that should have been the first give away. After one warm up song we were out of there and where did we end up.....the Walkabout. For those of you that don't know, the Walkabout is a pub chain aimed at Kiwi's/aussies and Saffas. They had an absolutely amazing covers band playing and that is
Foam party
There was so much foam coming off the sea, and these kids were down there chopping it up with their boogie boards, which made it fly across the beach and hit people. where we stayed until we rolled out at 1am.
Sunday saw us have an Easter egg hunt and then head back into Padstow for some more fudge and some crazy golf - because to be honest there isn't much else to do!! We also checked out the blow hole in the bay and it was absolutely amazing. Scary thing was that it was so windy and you had to be so careful not to be blown in, or off the edge of the cliff. Boys, being typical boys, actually ventured down into it even after warnings from the locals that "sometimes people go down and never come back" - sounds like something out of the twilight zone!!
Monday I went for a wander down to the rocks to do some rockpooling but was very disappointed that there wasn't much marine life - definitely not like Riversdale :-( I sat on the rocks for a while just listening to the waves and the seagulls - it really made me realise how much I miss the quietness of NZ. In London there is always something you can hear, it's never quiet - whether it's planes, sirens, cars, people shouting etc.
In Padstow
The quaint little fishing village - and where you can get the best fudge ever!! Then it was time to head back to London - my beach holiday was over :-(
So I now have a busy time ahead of me as I have lots of planning to do before I come home in January with Tim - yes he's coming to NZ with me. But before you all get too excited nothing is set in stone if I'm staying in NZ or going to Aussie for a year before we come back to the UK again. (Mum your not going to be happy about that are ya!? xox) I've got Egypt in about 3 weeks, then I'm looking at doing a week around Ireland in June/July, eastern europe in September, and probably more of Spain at some point. If you guys have any ideas of places that I should definitely see and visit before I come back, PLEASE let me know!!!
Hope you are all doing ok.
Big hugs
Rach
