Gruezi from Switzerland! Hope everyone is doing fine and getting ready for summer – we’re not quite there yet weather wise in Wengen but today is sunny as opposed to raining so it’s looking pretty good! And more importantly we haven’t had any more snow!
I’ve had quite a bit going on since I last wrote but it’s been fun and very enjoyable and seems to have involved mainly food…
Firstly, I’ve eaten way too many cakes in Café Schuh down in Interlaken – I think I need to throw a cake at some old lady or something just to get banned, but the cakes and desserts are just too nice – I also treated myself to a Hot Berry Ice Cream, my favourite, which means it can’t possibly be good for me even though berries count as fruit and therefore one of my 5 a day… And to make matters worse, this week a few of us are going to the Schuh Chocolate Show – I can’t wait for the chocolate tasting, it has to be the best bit! It’s great to
learn all about chocolate in Switzerland but I would definitely rather be eating it – in fact I’m sure it’s pretty much compulsory! :-)
Still on the food theme (and this is a tad embarrassing to admit…) I went in to one of the local pizza establishments recently – bearing in mind this is my third summer here, which kind of makes me a creature of habit I guess – although remember I have been away from Interlaken for about 4months… so, I fancied a pizza and when I walked in the pizza chef said ‘hey you are back, good to see you, a Hawaiian to go?
Now that is what you call excellent customer service! And thank goodness I still have heart-attack hill to tackle on a daily basis – although it is definitely getting easier… so long as I don’t have a sneaky smoke at Lauterbrunnen!
Apart from eating I have been down to Montreux again (that’s in the French area of Switzerland and one of my favourite places – the lakeside promenade with the beautiful floral displays, snow-capped mountains for the back drop and frequently better weather… I love Montreux) I also sneaked in a little bit of shopping… why is it when you go into a shop for something as simple as a pair of socks you have the ability to emerge an hour later with a complete new outfit…? So, complete with my purchases I left Montreux on the Golden Pass line back up to Interlaken – it goes through Gstaad and one day this summer I will get off the train and look around the place, one of the former Bonds has/had a place there so some celeb spotting could be on the cards – it’s on the ‘to do’ list.
My colleague, Steven, arrived in Switzerland – he’s not been here before so we’ve been exploring and finally I am going to see the biffy Bears in Bern with him… I’ve been promising to go for weeks and yesterday was the day! I was soooooo very excited!! Consequently the pics in this blog are of the bears… Bern is the very understated capital of Switzerland, full of fantastic medieval architecture that’s resulted in the whole city being listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site – and if you can just ignore the nightmare road works in the main street at the moment it’s a great city to come to for a weekend visit. Apart from my obvious favourite – the Bern Bears (I’ll maybe tell you another time how and why the bears are in Bern…), there’s an Einstein Museum, that’s located in one of his old residences, the Rose Garden is beautiful, it overlooks the city and is a great place for a picnic in the summer, the city also has an abundance of other museums, fountains and parks, tucked away little lanes that are home to quirky shops and street cafes galore – not forgetting it is home to the Swiss Parliament! Oh I nearly forgot… very important info… Bern also has Starbucks and Burger King – yay! Am I required to say that it also has other branded coffee shops and burger joints???
And our buddy from the Maldives, Rachael, is headed to la bella Italia this week so good luck to her and we’ll be down to visit soon – maybe we’ll get to take a boat trip on Lake Como to see if we can spot a certain Mr Clooney’s lakeside Italian retreat…? Could be a summer of seeing who can spot who…
A new regular occurrence in the mornings here in Wengen are the deer that come down to the meadow, out of the forest to graze – I can see them from my balcony – just haven’t managed to get a pic yet, although on this blog they’d have had to fight the bears for a slot… Better luck next time! And why when there is more than one deer do we still say deer and not deers…?
I know a couple of really bad jokes about deer/s…
What do you call a deer with no eyes? No idea!
What do you call a deer with no eyes and no legs? Still no idea!
I’ve also had some good news since my last blog so I would like to thank my good friends for their valued support and good advice – they read my blogs so I hope they know who they are…
Sadly as is often the case good news is marred by bad… so my deepest sympathy and thoughts are with two people very dear to me who lost loved ones way too young.
I don’t want to end on a sad note so I’ll just tell you that I have classed May as official baby arrival month in Swissyland… two friends are due to have a new addition each this month so I hope all goes well for all concerned and can’t wait for my first snuggles. Bring on the booties!
And finally the other reps are all due back – let the summer fun begin!!!
Happy travelling – love Tallulah x
