Farmland near the Brunig PassFarmland near the Brunig PassFarmland near the Brunig Pass

Lovely grassy small farms fill basins framed by forest and cliffs
We are hot and knackered! After yesterday's heat, today turned on the same so we thought we'd do a few less slopes. We headed off to Meirengen then up on the Seilbahn (cable car) to get us up on the cliff above the waterfall. We thought it would be a nice gentle walk after yesterday but instead had to head up even further to get right on top of the cliff top above the trees. Phew! Once there we were able to walk across country through the Hasliberg basin and across to the Brunig Pass which heads on down to Lucern.

We passed through mainly farmland with great views across the valley to the Rosenlaua Glacier and on up the valley to Grosse Scheidegg. Also in view were all the mountains on the northern side of Lake Brienz. We looked down into the valley to the Swiss Air Force runway and into the distance to the lake. Quite superb. The trail we took was the Panoramaweg running across the basin at just above 1000m. We wound down through small hamlets and found one house built in 1682. What on earth would anyone build a house way up there for so

This house was a mass of colourful window boxes and garden. On the path just below Wasserwendi in the Hasliberg
many years ago. It must have been a steep mule track to get there. Now there are roads for cars and buses. It is a very attractive area for hiking and I wonder why we didn't go here on other visits (apart from the Trans Alpine).

On approaching the Brunig Pass you finally get a downhill run for some of it while you skirt around huge rock cliffs to finally arrive at the Pass to catch the train back to Meirengen and Interlaken.

The Hasliberg area is filled with trails both high and low. We remember it as including the infamous route that we took off the Joch Pass down to Meirengen on our Alpine Pass Route hike across Switzerland a few years back. It took us 10 hours to get there - not such good memories.
