28th february 2004 Today i´m going to visit le Valais. This is the canton after the Lake Leman. Basically this little region is the upper river Rhône valley, sorrounded by mighty mountains, some of them being among the highest and with more personality in the Alps, like the Matterhorn. As i´m not very fit to do ascensions or good treks, and the trains or cable cars that take you to the mountains are really expensive, i´ll be only visiting Sion, the cantonal capital.
Sion lies in the middle of this region, a little town with a cosy medieval center, very
Sion
Rue du grand-pont nice for taking a walk. Specialy nice was the street that leads to the castles. In Sion two castles can be visited, being the best preserved Château La Valère. Actually is a fortified church dating from the XIIth century. Once it was the residene of the cathedral canons. This church houses the oldest playable pipeorgan in the world, and the views of the town and the valley from here are superb, a little grey and sad though: in spring or autumn it must be nicer, more colourful.
Even better views you can enjoy from the other castle: Château de Tourbillon, perched on another hill. It used to be the Sion bishop´s residence, but long ago, for it burned to ashes in the XVIIIth century and only some walls still remain.
In the early afternoon I took a train to Sierre (or Sieders in german) hoping to find a rougher mountanious landscape, but it´s very much the same as in Sion. Taking advantage of the local supermarket, I got myself some supplies, I mean, bread, chocolate and camembert cheese😊
My next stop was Martigny, in the way back to the lake and Geneva. It is the oldest town in
Calle del centro de Sion
Al fondo el castillo de Tourbillon Valais. The place was inhabited by the Romans, but there is not much to see now, so soon after I arrived i tool another train to Aigle, where there is a nice castle with many turrets. When I got off the train, I suddenly realized that i had forgotten my warm bonnet, so in the train i got again. Once i put it on, still in the train, we were moving again and decided to get off in the next stop instead: Montreux.
In Montreux, I just walked to the lakeshore and had some bread, cheese and chocolate and enjoyed the view very much.
Then I went back to Geneva. Next to me there was a woman who lost her ticket and was looking for it all the time, so gave me some entertainment. Besides, the sunset over the lake was gorgeous, therfore i have a pleasant train ride.
It´s my last night in Geneva. Tomorrow I´ll go to Bern, the country capital. I change hostel and language.
