It is our second full day in Switzerland. After a good night’s sleep I awoke to the sound of bells clanging in the distance. The bells really got going and I realized that I was hearing the clatter of cows as they started up the hillside to graze. They really can make some noise, but I’d take it any day over sirens and cars. We enjoyed a beautiful breakfast replete with fresh fruit, granola, eggs, meats, cheeses, and an assortment of freshly baked bread. The coffee here is so good, and the students have been very game to try most anything. I grabbed an orange for later at breakfast and then we headed out the door to tour a Benedictine monastery. We had the best tour guide, Brother Thomas, who seemed glad to have us and ... read more

Actually the title is just kidding! I had a blast today i just laugh because because im not very religous nor a huge fan of cheese. But still a fun day. First off I learned that real swiss cheese is way different from anything really found in the U.S. as swiss cheese. There is the fact that it is first of all unpasteurized which changes the taste and texture quite a bit. It does have a lot more of a bite to it. To be honest Im not much of a cheese or dairy fan but i do like what I can get here much better than anything back home. I've always known how hospitality in the U.S. and Europe are different but I never realized just how serious the Swiss take their hospitality. I mean ... read more

Today we started off by going to the Engleberg Monestary. Our guide, Brother Thomas guided our group around and explained all the information in great detail and answered each question to the best of his knowledge. I cannot describe what an amazing experience this was for me. To be surrounded with such beautiful senary and on top of that be inside a building with great importance is something that I will never forget. My favorite part of the whole tour was going to the library. Right as I walked in I thought to myself that I was watching Beauty and the Beast, when Bell walked into the library because the Beast gave it to her. I could'nt take enough pictures of the beautiful hand painted pink door with this giant brass lock that not even Brother ... read more

This morning we toured Kloster Monastery in Engelberg. I cannot get over how beautiful everything is around here, including the monastery. My favorite part of the monastery was the Room of Virtures. The wooden inlays were so detailed and fascinating. I really liked the "spes" one because that means Hope and Hope is my middle name. I was sure to get a picture of it. The monk who toured us around was so intriguing to listen to. He reminded me of a little kid who was sooo excited to tell us what he knew about yet it was so hard to understand him! I was excited that we got to meet a real monk and learn about the abby from an insider's point of view. The history behind it all was interesting to hear about, like ... read more

PROPT: Think about the customer service you recieved on the flight and in the airport (at restaurants, shops). Was it what you expected? Better than you expected? How was the airport in Zurich different than the airport in Houston? The gentelman who helped us get all of our bags checked and boarding passes printed was very helpful and friendly. The ladies helping him did not seem as welcoming but they did get all of us through efficently. There was only 1 security agent who seemed happy to be there. He was joking with me about my shoe that fell out of the box and rolled down the line after the box. He made getting through the line less stressful. No one at any of the airport shops in Houston or Newark stands out in my mind ... read more

Today we started with a great breakfast at the hotel. Lots of fresh bread, an amazing homemade jam, tea, and yogurt. The Swiss people do like their dairy products! Next we walked over to the Engelberg monastery which was founded over 800 years ago. The monastery has 31 Benedict monks. The Benedict order was founded by St. Benedict during the 6th century and as Brother Thomas explained, the rules are not too strict or too severe. 300 years ago the entire church burned down and was rebuilt. Then the monastery burned down in the 1700’s due to a firework accident. It was repaired after 25 years. It also features a school which for a long time was only open to boys. Now it is open to the village and to girls. We were lead on our ... read more

PROMPT: How is real Swiss cheese different from what we normally get in the U.S? Is hospitality an important part of the Swiss economy? How so? Name something new you learned in the lecture today. For starters, real Swiss cheese tastes a whole lot better than the cheese back home! I think that it is because it is usually made and purchased locally so that you really get the flavor of an area. Real Swiss cheese is also not pasteurized like a lot of cheeses back home and is instead made with raw milk. Hospitality is a vital part of the Swiss economy! Each season brings in a different set of tourists. In the winter, the tourists who like to do snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding come. During the summer, tourists that like to ... read more

Like most things in life, hospitality differs from one region to another. In Texas, employees are expected to be kind and friendly to customers. In the Houston airport that expectation was met to the fullest, even when it came to the water lady. When she noticed the stunned look present on my face to see that the 20 oz. bottle of smart water was a steep $3.34 she suggested that I could buy Dasani for a dollar less. I thought that was very kind of her to do! Of course I kept with my smart water but still, the gesture was just the kind of thing one would almost expect. Needless to say, most Texas hospitality is up to a good ranking in my book. However, as soon as we set foot on the plane, the ... read more

So we took off, not bad! I've been on hundreds of flights all over the world so this was just one more. I was excited to be going somewhere new but the thought of sitting on planes for hours just doesn't excite me! Not much to talk about here except for customer service on the plane and in airports. It was exactly what i was expecting. Just people doing their hourly job. Alot of immigrant workers as well but again nothing new to me. On the plane to Zurich though you could tell the stewards tok their job much more seriously than in the U.S. I was amazed at the slowness of Zurich airport. Maybe its just because it was so early but the airport was just so slow paced! My kind of place! Not so ... read more
