In early March we took our trusty car and drove down to Västergötland District for a weekend. Ake grew up in this part of Sweden, so we've been here many times and know it fairly well. We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden. We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them. Not only the wooden houses are spectacular in Hjo. We also found this awesome door

Lake Vättern

Hjo sits next to Lake Vättern, the second largest lake in Sweden

In Hjo they have a beach and along it there are several photogenic beach huts.

Along Hjo stream there are many historically interesting remains of old dams and mills.

Karlsborg Fortress

On our way back to Stockholm we made a stop in the town Karlsborg to visit Karlsborg Fortress.

They started the construction of the fortress in early 19th century.

When it was finished, almost a century later, that kind of fortress was obsolete. The impressive construction that stands there today can be described as a bit of a fiasco.

Possibly in L'Anse aux Meadows
If there are any I guess they would be in L'Anse aux Meadows. That's the only known Viking settlement in Canada. /Ake

It is great visiting local and homelands with visitors eyes while taking the time to stop and explore thing we used to drive past. We look forward to visiting Sweden.

I Love Hjo
I'm glad you mentioned how to pronounce it, otherwise I would have had no idea! Ah, it seems like a lovely nostalgic trip, and I love the photo of Ake and his sister before and after ? I also stock up my freezer regularly with Swedish meatballs from Ikea, so it's nice to read about where they come from! Such a lot of interesting places to visit in such a short space of time - well done you both! ?
