We started out to the Malmo Arena on Sunday, January 5th with high hopes for Canada to win the Bronze in their game against Russia. Unfortunately, our boys were not playing well, looking a little tired and lacking in control. Russia took the bronze medal in the 2-1 game.
As we were a little tired of rink food and all of the nearby "restaurants" (Subway, McDonalds, etc.) had long lineups out their doors, we crossed the street to the Emporia mall to find a restaurant for supper. The crowds were just as bad there but we found a Chinese Dim Sum place in the food court with only a small crowd of hungry people waiting. We got our food quickly, and found a table near the back of the HUGE seating area and we all enjoyed our meals.
Back at the rink the stands were predominately yellow now with Swedish jerseys but still lots of red Canadian fans too. Of course we were cheering for Sweden to beat Finland for the gold. Their team looked closer in skill levels than we saw in Canada's medal attempt but unfortunately, the Swedes could not pull off a home win with the
stronger, faster Finland team winning in overtime, 3-2.
The lineup for the bus to go home was nearly as bad as the suppertime restaurants, but we managed to push and fight our way onto the number 6 bus, squished in like sardines, and made our way home; the World Juniors at an end.
Monday, January 6th was a more relaxed day and we all slept in a bit. We decided to venture out on the buses again to check out the IKEA, near the Malmo Arena. From our online map, it appeared to be at the back of a huge shopping centre. The reality turned out to be that IKEA "IS" the huge shopping centre!
We followed the arrows projected onto the floor to weave our way through three floors of primarily housewares and home decorating shopping and then stopped for lunch in their enormous restaurant. It's cafeteria style with a nice assortment of hot and cold typical Swedish meals. They have a very efficient setup where you dump your garbage and recycling out then put your tray, plates and utensils directly onto a conveyor belt heading back into the kitchen.
We picked up a few
groceries (Swedish meatballs and snacks) in their grocery department before heading out. After we got home it was straight into the car and out to COOP to buy some taco supplies for supper. We all had a nice, relaxing evening reading or watching movies and doing some laundry.
Tuesday, January 7th is starting out pretty slow; as I write this at 12:30 the kids are both still sleeping. No plans for today other than packing and cleaning up as the kids fly home tomorrow. Chris and I are staying on until Friday when we'll go to Copenhagen to stay at an airport hotel overnight to catch an early Saturday morning flight to Hamburg.
The kids both told me last night that they really enjoyed the trip. I asked them what their favourite thing was and Alex immediately said Canada beating the USA! Greg said that was pretty good too but touring Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen was also a highlight for him. They were unanimous in the worst thing; my choice to get onto the number 6 bus after New Years Eve fireworks.....in the wrong direction! Who knew they don't drive in a loop but go in a straight
