Red Hakws Warmup
Even the warmup is slightly spectacular :) Malmö Red Hawks vs. Nybro whatever!
Last days have been interesting! On Wednesday I have gone to an ice hockey match with Svenja's Mentor group. They had their trip planned out and told us about it, me and Hannes thought it sounded like a good idea so we went ahead and invited ourselves to the match. No one seemed to mind and as it turned out I actually knew half the mentor group from the international welcome party already.
So off we went, to the Malmö Red Hawks in their stadium! It was raining cats and dogs as we went there so the trip wasn't really worth remembering but we did go to this supermarket where, according to Swedish tradition, I bought a sandwich with red beets and meatballs... Only the sauce wasn't red, but a very chemical shade of pink, ah well, it tasted fine! Some of us loaded up with some beers (I didn't!) and off we went.
During the trip Hannes, who is an ice-hockey fanatic, explained the most important rules to me, especially the ice-hockey version of off-side and 'icing'. It all comes down to not being able to just play the puck forward
Hooligans!
Svenjas german mentor, we all know how well Germans and Dutch supporters get along. He made me promise not to tell but I did get a beer out of him! (not during the game though!) like a maniac but you actually have to accompany the puck on it's journey to your opponents side with some of your own players (instead of just good luck shots to the other side). This helped a lot during the game. He also informed me that the team we were 'supporting' was basically too good for the 2nd division they were in so it was likely they would win.
So we got standing places between the very fanatical Red Hawks supporters who sang all sorts of songs. I couldn't understand a word but the general melody was very much the same as the songs sung in Holland during football matches so we just yelled with them 😉. A big difference with football though is the start of the game. This loud and impressive anthem blared out of the speakers, smoke was blowed out on the ice and above the tunnel was a huge motherf*cking hawk with laser eyes! Out of this tunnel came the players and some of them got their own 'presentation'. Very show like but very cool 😊. Now Ice Hockey is played in three thirds (sorry if you know the rules, to me most of this
Red Hakws supporters
*Insert random football melody song here* was new) so we had two breaks, during which Hannes and I bought a scarf and a shirt to show our love for the Red Hawks some more, how could we not after such a spectacular entrance.
First third was pretty boring, ending in 0-0, even though the Nybro whatevers (sorry, don't remember their name 😊) had two periods of power play (when a player of the opposing team gets a 'penalty' he usually leaves the field for 2 minutes, this stacks for a maximum of two times). Second period was very spectacular though! Goals on both sides during power plays and a VERY nice goal from the Red Hawks where a player plucked the puck out of the air and in one sweep (still through the air) put it in the goal, nice assist from 15 meters away as well. Last period had a fight, so us tourists were happy and a penalty-shot, which the red hawks managed to miss. In the end they won (iirc) 5 goals to 3 so GO RED HAWKS!
After getting the adrenaline out of our system we all went home again and dreamt about ice hockey 😊
Corridor
FIGHT!
Icehockey is a cultured sport for gentlemen Party!
And now for the beer and wodka part of the title! As I said I hadn't drunk any beers during the ice hockey game so I guess some of you were wondering what is wrong with me. Well the friday after the ice hockey match we had a corridor party! Just to start the new semester Matan posted a nice open event on facebook about our party where everyone could come! Well we sure as hell noticed that facebook works as a promotional tool. We had well over 200 guests at our party (here in Sweden it is 'everyone brings their own drinks!' which works very well if there are many guests) so yeah, it was really cool. There were so many people there, especially international students, that the party overflowed into other corridors.
It was a night of meeting people, re-meeting people, and fighting to get to the bathroom, since both are located on the ends of the corridor. Also keeping people OUT of my room proved a challenge, but a strong lock and a strong determination go a long way. Our 50-meter long corridor was pretty much filled to capacity with people standing in
Penalty shot
Will he score! Read the report for the conclusion! a non-to-organized manner so getting through one end involved a lot of pushing and shoving. There was much drinking, especially in the kitchen where we had (thanks for that Matan!) a sound system and (unstable) tables to dance on. I think even God loved our party cause no one got hurt in the end. All that went missing out of my fridge were two 'Swedish' beers (3.5% beer) and I can't blame anyone for going on a desperate hunt for beer. Someone did manage to destroy the window of our front door but fortunately he was stupid or arrogant enough to do it in front of the police (who arrived because we were breaking fire regulations, but they were really nice about it) so he got a free night at the down town cell.
There was however some fallout after the party since the International Housing Office does not support any form of partying in student corridors (a bit naive if you ask me), and since Matan was the creator of the event on facebook and made a sarcastic remark about our new 'low-tech ventilation' in the door, which the IHO took as a sign that he was proud
Red Hakws thank us
Thanking the crowd for their awesome support (obviously!) of a destroyed door they wrote a very angry letter 😊. Unfortunately also to his coordinator back home but I hope people in Holland are not that anal about partying in student corridors. Guess here in Sweden it is slightly different.
The beer and vodka kept me up till 6 AM when the last guests started to leave, and I went to bed satisfied. Luckily for me some others went to bed earlier, so got up earlier as well and cleaned everything out. When I woke up virtually nothing was visible of the hordes of drunken students who had visited us some 8 hours ago, very nice!
PS: I cannot help the positioning of the photos unless I host them myself so you all have to live with this weird positioning 😊
