River Seine
The River Seine and its surroundings is a UNESCO world heritage site Short blog entry on a visit to Paris in 2007
In November 2007 we went to Paris over a weekend. But we never got around to write a blog entry about it back then. We do that now instead.
We have both been to Paris before so we are familiar with the city. But Paris is a big city with vast amounts of cultural heritage and famous places so you can visit Paris many times and still find new things to see. But we were not that interested in seeing a lot of new places this time. Instead we made short visits at places we have already seen. But we felt that we wanted to visit one place that was new to us both. This place was Mona Lisa. In spite that we both have Paris before none of us has seen Mona Lisa.
Here you have what we saw when we were in Paris
*
The Eiffel Tower - constructed for the World Fair in Paris. It is one of the most easily recognisable constructions in the World and a landmark and symbol for the city Paris.
*
Moulin Rouge - theatre or cabaret where the

movie Moulin Rouge! by the way.
*
Sacré-Cœur - the basilica Sacré-Cœur sits like a big meringue on top of a hill in the area Montmartre.
*
Arc de Triomphe - not the largest and not the oldest, but still the triumphal arch that sets the standard for all the triumphal arches of the World.
*
Centre Georges Pompidou or just Centre Pompidou - art museum with a daring architectural design.
*
Notre Dame - one of the classical churches of the World. Another place in Paris where an excellent movie takes place. We can recommend you to see
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the version with Charles Laughton as Quasimodo. It is an absolute masterpiece.
*
Père Lachaise Cemetery - the most visited cemetery in Paris. It is the final resting place for many celebrities. The two most controversial, and the two most visited, graves at Père Lachaise Cemetery are Oscar Wilde's and Jim Morrison's. Oscar Wilde is a Gay Icon and many people who visit his grave writes messages or put lipstick marks on the grave. Jim Morrison is a hippie icon and people who visit his grave have been known to throw parties and

*
Musée du Louvre - This gigantic art museum houses two of the most famous art treasures in the World -
Mona Lisa and
Venus de Milo. What else can you see in the Louvre? Roughly 23000 items that 90%!o(MISSING)f all visitors don't give a damn about?
*
Statue of Liberty - in Paris they have a smaller version of the Statue of Liberty.
*
Café The Two Windmills - pretty much just an ordinary café until they used the place for recording scenes in the movie
Amélie. Now the café is a regular tourist attraction.
* Metro stations designed by
Hector Guimard - the architect Hector Guimard invented a style which has become a symbol of the Paris Metro system. You can his stations in many places in Paris.
We really enjoyed this weekend in Paris. So much in fact that we decided to go there again half a year later. More about that you can read on the next entry on this blog.
