The bus trip from Valencia to Alicante is lovely. Only 3 hours and with glimpses of the coast all the way.
First impressions of my hotel were “what the?” Vans, trucks and people everywhere. It seems they’re filming ‘My big fat greek wedding 2’ in my hotel so inside was Hollywood in Action!
Quick costume change and straight to the beach. I soo love a Mediterranean beach. Miles of sun beds full with beautiful people, so down goes my sarong and in goes the ipod.
It’s a lovely 27 degrees but it’s a dry heat so very pleasant. Check out the hot Latinos - everywhere! Where to look, stop steering … but they’re so HOT! Hunk next to me has a mate join him, even hunkier, then they’re both up and heading towards the volleyball court and start setting up, then there’s some jumping, diving, laughing, high 5’ing…I could watch this all afternoon, but on the other side are 2 young guys kicking a soccer ball. They’re very good - balancing, catching with their feet, knees, chest, ah something else to look at.
Turns out the football guys have plonked their towels next to me and when
they come over, they start a conversation with me…kinda weird as I was topless, but hey, this is Europe. Their English is not so good and my Spanish is not so good, lucky I bought my phrase book. We’ve arranged to meet up later, for what though, I don’t know. They pick me up at my hotel at 10pm with 3 bottles of sangria in hand and we’re off to hang at the beach…hehe
All is great - A lovely mild evening, sangria, hashish and two fit 24 year old Spaniards. With all the sangria finished we’re off to a bar and end up at Penelope. Nice little set up just across from the port. Seats outside, bar inside and even a dj box, but nothing was happening tonight. ‘Saturday it gets going’ Fawndo (the boss) informs me. Everyone is so helpful and friendly here. The boys are lovely, I called it a night and they walk me home and invite me out again tomorrow night.
After a great 9 hour sleep, I’m up and atom. First reserve a room at my next stop, Granada but its full, no vacancies anywhere, so I’ve booked Hostel Americano in Almeria.
Next is the bus station to get me there, then straight up to Castillo de Santa Barbara, a fortress dating to the 12th century. The elevator that normally whisks you straight up to the top is out so it’s a long hot walk to the top but once there - Fantastica! Magnificent views over the city and sea and a great place to take photographs.
On the walk down I’ve stopped to chat to the gardener, he tells me to be aware of the people about, look after my camera. Further down, just as I hit homes I chat with a little old lady, again she says I should take care of my bags. Mustn’t be in a safe neighbourhood but nothing bad happens. If anything, I’ve missed some lovely photo opportunities because I was a little afraid to take my camera out.
I’m straight to the beach to catch the last 3 hours of sun and I bump into the boys, kicking their football again.
On the way home I pop into Penelope bar for a roadie and the staff are all back on and are taking me out tonight after work.
We head straight
to the port - it’s alive with people bar hopping. In for a dance, a couple of drinks don’t like that song, drink up and go next door. There’s no cover charge anywhere so it’s easy to just keep going into other bars. Heaps of dancing, giggling, speaking Spanglish and before I know it the sun is coming up. What a great night. Lucky I’ve already packed coz now I can sleep till 11am and check out.
Alicante really is lovely. Palm lined boulevards, great night life and the beach is right down the road. The people are friendly and very relaxed. I stayed 2 nights but could have stayed 3. Hotel Goya 45euro per night for a double room.
