Entering I went to the festival of San Fermin today (Aka, the running of the bulls). No, I didn’t run with the bulls, though I would consider it at a future, crazier date. I had to wake up at 4 am this morning to be at the bus by 5. After some confusion over whether the phone was ringing or my alarm was going off (it happened to be the latter; after several minutes of being confused as to why the phone wouldn’t stop ringing when I picked it up, I realized my mistake) I got ready an boarded the bus for the 2 hour drive to Pamplona.
Once in Pamplona we made our way directly to the corral where the Bulls end up after the run (I didn’t actually see the run itself until I watched the news.) Here’s a fun fact you may have not known about the running of the bulls: The actual running only takes about 3 minutes. So what do they do for the rest of the 45min ceremony, you ask? All of the runners (the humans that is) stay in the ring if they so chose while, one by one, some of the smaller,
“baby” bulls are released into the ring and mess some people up. The bulls’ horns are taped so that the danger is much less, but a few people got hurt pretty badly.
After the carnage, we went on a hunt in Pamplona for some Chocolate con Churros. On the way, we met one of the crazy blokes (he was British) who were in the ring with the bulls. He was easily identified by the blood he still had on his forehead. After meeting him, one of our number realized that she had a video of this man, Rupert, being tossed about by a bull. He was entangled in the bull’s horns for a good 10 seconds before being thrown down to the ground (I’m trying to get a copy of this video to share with all of you). After having a drink with him and his friends (everyone in Pamplona was drunk…at 8:00 AM), we headed to the bus to take us to lunch in San Sebastian—2 hours away.
After lunch we drove into the heart of San Sebastian. It was pouring down rain, so the tour leaders decided to have us only stay an hour in the
town. We visited the local aquarium (nothing compared to Chicago’s), took some pictures of the scenery, and got back onto the bus.
Overall this was one of the best days here in Spain. Unfortunately, my camera has decided that taking pictures in focus is not something it cares to do. I’ll post some pictures from my camera but I’m going to try to steal some better ones from my friends.
¡Olé!
P.S. Harry Potter comes out tomorrow. I will be seeing it ASAP. Seeing Harry and the gang speaking in Spanish will be…different, but still!
