Starting out of Belorado
Met up with a very friendly cat .... The word for today is "OUCH" as the baby toe on my left foot "screamed" for the last 8 kilometers of today's hike. What started out as a cool, comfortable day for hiking turned into a "trial by fire" fuelled by the sun's burning rays.
Met what we thought was a "friendly" cat, turned out to be a "typical" cat - nice to you when they want something, and then taking a nip at you when they have enough! Luckily, el Gato didn't break the skin ? .
Came upon a sign indicating 531 km to Santiago - meaning we have walked over 270 km! The signs here can be tricky; so I am also wearing a FitBit to help keep track of distance. the "real" distances are probably somewhere in between! All I know is that this "journey" is incredibly tough - as. Much mentally as it is physically! Thank goodness I have hooked up with some buddies who seem to think we will stay together (so far, so good ? )!
The final 8 km to San Juan de Ortega were excruciating! I've developed blisters on top of the callouses (didn't know that was possible) on
both baby toes. we were so glad to reach San Juan, but were very disappointed by the Albergue - particularly the bathrooms and showers ( very scarey)! The highlight though, was attending 6 o'clock mass in the cathedral - very nice!
