So have you ever wondered how many ants there are on the planet? If you have walked how far we have spending a reasonable proportion of your day staring at the ground in front of you, you will have. By my reckoning there are at least one thousand times as many of them as there are of us. Contemplate that something slightly bigger than them eats them and so on and so on. You will quickly realise as I have that these tiny tikes are a pretty important part of the food chain. If ever they were to dissapear we would be in serious trouble! Yes it was hot today. A long day and not much to look at.
Today we left the region of La Roija - remember silent j, wrong, it is apparently sounded as an h, La Royha. I am so pleased we left this region. Some bright spark regional council member decided it was a clever idea to place a 1km count down of the Camino through the entire region. Can you imagine how frustratingly slowly each and every 1km sign appears in front of you? Not just when you get to it either but from
at least 999m away just after but likely before you lose sight of the last one. If I was doing this again I would be sorely tempted to bring a chainsaw!
Some amazing views today looking back over the area we have walked, we hope the photo attached does it justice. The countryside is nothing but beautiful, lush, green and clearly very fertile. We stopped and watched a farmer ploughing his field today, yesterday he had planted acres of veges and had the irrigation on. It looked incredible, so simple yet such a fundamental part of life in this region. We seem to have moved out of the wine growing region into the vege market. All the veges are grown on the lower and presumably more fertile areas with the wheat and maze on the slopes. We followed the main road between Santo Domingo and Balorado today. Wide paths of limestone which we are now convinced is the right material for the drive. Once compacted it is as hard as.
We finally plucked up the courage to stay in an alberque last night. Fair to say on this trip not likely to happen again. Had we not been
spoiled with the lovely hotels we have stayed at we could possibly have continued to use them. Lots of snoring, cold, showers that ran out of hot water before we got there and no cuddles. For us the hotels will continue and as we have nicknamed him the ***priest Father Ken concurs.
That's it today as I am getting behind. Going to stop on the trail at a village and catch up with our blogs.
Big day for the kids tomorrow travelling to LA on their own and on standby. We are a little nervous for them. Likely they will have a ball and will be excited so it is just parents doing their worry thing.
