Buenas Tardes amigos, Another weekend came and went here in Spain. I traveled to Valladolid (Northwest about 3 hours from Madrid) to visit some friends from AIESEC. I didn't really know what to expect because Valladolid is much smaller than Madrid, but it did used to be the capital of Spain so it has a lot of beautiful buildings and palaces. I wasn't about to turn down an invitation to stay in the apartment with three wonderful ladies, so i bought my bus ticket and was on my way. Once I got there Filio (greek friend from AIESEC) picked me up at the station and we went directly to campo grande (huuuuge park) and met up with her other roommate from Syndey who was really fun and nice as well. I wasn't really planning on sightseeing ... read more

Steph and I made our way to my favorite town in Spain, Valladolid. After a 7 year absence, it was time to get reaquainted with the city where all of my ideas about traveling got started. As Steph and I headed north through the heart of Castilla y Leon it was like a complete time warp for me ... possibly for Steph too but she was sleeping during the entire time we were in the train. In 2002 I counted 9 times that I made the trip from Madrid to Valladolid so it was a route with which I am quite familiar. We made it to Valladolid around 6:45pm and I was excited as I have been this entire trip for a couple of reasons. First, I really wanted to show Steph Valladolid, the one big ... read more

After a quiet stroll and breakfast at our hotel we headed off for another day of adventure ending at a monesterio turned hotel. I'm afraid my journal of our trip and pictures are going to get redundant. I don't know if I just don't remember our previous trips to Europe or Spain has a lot more ruins of ancients times. It seems like evey hilltop has evidence of villages, castles, palaces, etc. We spent the day stopping off at various towns and villages as Lynn reported on the travels of King Fernando, Queen Isabel and Juana (Juana La Loca): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juana_of_Castile). History has not been kind to KF and QI's third child, whom inherited the crown, as "Joan the Mad" may be an unfair and inaccurate label...hence our fact finding journey thru Spain. We stopped off inTordesillas ... read more

Hello all! I'm sure you're all excited to hear the update on my family's visit last week. Well, I can sum it up by saying we had a GREAT time & it was really nice to have them here. I went down to Madrid on Wed to pick up my MOM & SISTER. Ruso came with me. Well, the unexpected surprise was that out of nowhere, my father pops into the picture!!! He was at the airport waiting for me too! To be honest, I still can't believe my dad was brave enough to step foot out of the US. For years I have been trying to convince my dad to come to Spain & he always responds the same, 'I have no interest in Spain. If I'm going to Europe, I want to visit Germany.' ... read more

Hello! I know it's been a long time since you've heard from me, but I have no pics to add, so I feel bad just sending text....oh well, hopefully I'll write clearly enough so you have a full vision of what I've seen recently. Not quite sure where I left off, but the most recent big event in Spain for me was Semana Santa, or Holy Week in Valladolid. I went to several of the Holy Week processions, which are like nothing I've seen in the US. Easter is celebrated quite differently here. The whole week in Valla is filled with processions every day to celebrate the Passion. These are indeed the processions with the people dressed up in the huge hoods, that look like KKK outfits. It is actually quite scary when you're watching the ... read more

Your eyes are getting heavy...you are VERY sleepy...you are going back to your High School World History Class & you are remembering the TREATY OF TORDESILLAS. Maybe you aren't. Anyway, the Treaty of Tordesillas was a famous treaty signed in 1494, I think, that divided the world between Spain & Portugal during the time of exploration. WEll, the treaty was signed in Tordesillas, which is 1/2 an hour away from Valladolid. So that's where I spent all day last Saturday! It was a beautiful day, & a nice little trip that Emma & I took. It cost us less than 4 euros each to get there & back (about $6 US). It've a very small town, but the weather was beautiful & it's high up in the hills, so the view is just marvelous. We went ... read more

Well, Carnaval weekend in Spain was a lot of fun...in fact, I had never celebrated Carnaval (Mardi Gras) in the US, so this was my first. I was super sick pretty much all weekend, but I refused to halt since I had made plans. I went out Fri night, but ended up going home early. Slept all day (literally) on Friday, until I woke up & got ready for dinner. You see, my friend from Scotland (Ana María) and 3 other ladies from Gym Bym & I went to a special dinner. Dinner was beautiful, but the best part was the show we saw after...it was a show (Espectáculo de los boys)...yes, they call it 'Espectáculo de los BOYS.' Yes, a strip show! A spanish strip show! It was a blast! The boys were super hot ... read more

Apparently, to get your English teaching experience in, you have to leave the english speaking countries first. Before getting back into gear for our second semester abroad, Laurel and I spent the week in Valladolid (a two hour ish drive north of Madrid) helping run an intensive english program for a group of Spanish people that work for Vodafone (like the Spanish verizon). It was 6 on 6, as in 6 members of each native language. We met the Spaniards at a four star hotel called Lasa Sport, and played a few break the ice games that I´ll definitely take back to Swedish camp, because they were a lot harder than they initially seemed. For example, trying to order ourselves correctly according to the number we had by making only bird noises and with our eyes ... read more

¡Hola! I apologize ahead of time for my negligence. I know it's been forever since I've blogged, but life has been crazy...but a good crazy. Let's see, I don't remember my last entry exactly, but as a brief update the Christmas holiday were ultra-long here (since they celebrate the 3 Wise Men we didn't go back to work until Jan 8!!!) I actually got bored because the gym hours were messed up & most of my friends went home (aka, England, Scotland, etc.) I went to Lyon, France for 4 days to visit my friend Aaron & his family that live there. Iwas there for Christmas Eve & Christmas. New Years Eve was great!!! NO restaurants were open, so my 2 American friends & I were starving & were disillusioned that we couldn't even get a ... read more
